WWE: 10 Reasons Daniel Bryan Will Not Win the World Heavyweight Title

Drake OzJun 3, 2018

When Daniel Bryan won Smackdown’s Money in the Bank match last month,  it was a great moment for wrestling fans who have followed him all the way from the indy scene to the WWE.

Bryan is widely considered to be one of the—if not the—best wrestlers on the planet, and when he grabbed that briefcase, it made us think that anything could happen in the WWE.

But after Bryan took one step closer to his dream of winning a world title, the elation among Bryan’s fans quickly turned to doubt.

Even though the WWE brass had enough confidence in Bryan to book him to win Money in the Bank, no one’s sure that they are really going to have him win a World Championship.

Actually, neither am I.

Here are 10 reasons why Daniel Bryan will not win the World Heavyweight Championship when he cashes in his MITB briefcase.

10. He Might Actually Lose the Money in the Bank Briefcase

1 of 10

Only one wrestler has lost his Money in the Bank briefcase: Mr. Kennedy, who put his briefcase on the line against Edge because he was injured and needed to be written off of TV.

Obviously, no wrestler has ever lost the briefcase simply for storyline purposes, and that’s a possibility that I’ve considered with the last three or four briefcase holders.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Daniel Bryan put his briefcase on the line as a way of “proving he’s worthy” of holding it, only to lose it to one of Smackdown’s up-and-coming heels, such as Wade Barrett.

9. He Won’t Go over at WrestleMania

2 of 10

Daniel Bryan has gone on record in saying that he won’t cash in his MITB briefcase until WrestleMania 28.

Think about that for a second. Do you honestly and truly believe that Bryan is going to walk out of Miami next year as the World Heavyweight Champion?

I guess crazier things have happened, but I can’t for the life of me picture Bryan being given that much of a spotlight at the biggest pay-per-view of the year.

After all, this is the same guy that was relegated to a dark match at last year’s WrestleMania, and a leap from off the card to the top of it is a huge stretch.

8. He Has No Real Gimmick

3 of 10

Other than his in-ring ability, what separates Daniel Bryan from the rest of the pack?

Nothing really.

Bryan has been in the WWE for more than a year now, but he’s still yet to develop any sort of gimmick whatsoever. He’s basically just a guy who wrestles. That’s it.

There’s no particular reason for us to hate or like him, like we do with guys like CM Punk, Christian and Alberto Del Rio.

They’re all despised or loved for some reason or another, while Bryan’s main appeal to fans is what he does in the ring. He’s got to give us more than that at some point.

7. It Would Benefit Him More to Lose When He Cashes In

4 of 10

Was Christian’s character over with the fans before he won the World Heavyweight Championship? Of course.

Was it 10 times better after he lost the title? Absolutely.

Truth is, when Christian lost the World Heavyweight Championship, it did more for him than a lengthy title reign ever would have. It made his character more interesting and gave him some much needed depth.

The same could happen for Daniel Bryan, who might very well go from mundane wrestler to exciting face (or hated heel) if he loses when he cashes in.

6. His Lack of Mic Skills

5 of 10

Daniel Bryan’s not nearly as bad on the mic as people make him out to be. In fact, I think he can actually be pretty damn good at times.

But the recent World Champions in the WWE—aside from Randy Orton—all have one thing in common: They’re great on the mic.

John Cena, Alberto Del Rio, CM Punk and Christian are among the best talkers in the business, and their promo ability was as big a factor in them getting World title pushes as their in-ring skills.

Bryan has no choice but to step it up in the promo department—and he needs to be given the opportunity to do so—or he may see his world title dream run away from him.

5. He’s Been Booked Like a Loser

6 of 10

You would think that, after winning Smackdown’s Money in the Bank match, Daniel Bryan would be booked like a star, or at least a star in the making.

But aside from a few wins over guys like Heath Slater, Bryan hasn’t exactly been doing his Charlie Sheen impression, i.e., "winning."

Bryan lost to Wade Barrett at SummerSlam and Alberto Del Rio on Friday’s Smackdown, though, I guess wrestling the WWE Champion in a competitive match doesn’t hurt him too much—and he doesn’t really have any notable wins since Money in the Bank.

Why? I have no idea. But that needs to change before I have any confidence in Bryan successfully cashing in his briefcase.

4. He Doesn’t Have the Look of a Prototypical WWE Star

7 of 10

You knew this was coming.

Though guys like CM Punk and Christian have broken the mold and won world titles recently, recent WWE history says that someone like Daniel Bryan isn’t going to carry the World Heavyweight Championship.

Vince McMahon tends to put the strap on jacked/ripped-up wrestlers, such as Batista, Randy Orton and John Cena, rather than the smaller guys who can really go in the ring.

Vinny Mac undoubtedly has an unhealthy obsession with the big guys, and that’s likely not going to change anytime soon.

When the time comes that McMahon and the creative team debate whether or not to give Bryan a world title reign, Bryan’s look will definitely hurt him.

3. Smaller World Champions are Treated as Jokes

8 of 10

Let’s take a look at the three most recent World champions who didn’t quite look like the prototypical WWE star.

Christian: He’s held the World twice this summer, but both reigns combined lasted less than a month. He never beat Randy Orton clean, and he was referred to as the “World Champion” rather than the World Heavyweight Champion.

CM Punk:  He beat John Cena for the WWE Championship twice, but both victories were tainted. He wound up dropping the belt to Alberto Del Rio just a few weeks after winning it.

Rey Mysterio: He held the WWE Championship for less than two hours. Enough said.

There you have it, folks, concrete evidence that the WWE does a pretty horrendous job in booking its smaller world champions.

So, if they’re not going to take those guys seriously, then why give them the title at all?

2. He’s Not Going to Sell Out an Arena

9 of 10

If a wrestler’s spot on the card was determined by how good or entertaining he is in the ring, then you’d see guys like Evan Bourne and Tyson Kidd headlining WWE pay-per-views (along with Daniel Bryan).

But you don’t.

Why? Because although they’re all very good or even great wrestlers, none of them are going to sellout an arena.

The majority of wrestling fans who attend live events do so because they want to see wrestlers who are larger than life.

I hate to say it, but you can walk down the street and see 10 guys who look more impressive than Daniel Bryan.

He’s not going to draw a ton of fans to WWE shows, and that’s definitely going to work against him.

1. The Money in the Bank “Streak” Has to End at Some Point

10 of 10

Every single superstar who has cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase succeeded when doing so. That is, they wound up winning the WWE or World Heavyweight Championship.

That streak has to end at some point, don’t you think?

It’s going to be a bit redundant and monotonous to see every wrestler cash that briefcase in and walk away as World champion, and the shock value of a cash-in will start to get old really fast (if it hasn’t already).

If anyone’s going to lose his cash-in match, it could certainly be Daniel Bryan, especially if he does what he says he’s going to do and gives the champion forewarning before he cashes in.
