WWE: John Cena/CM Punk Remains Top Draw for Wrestling Fans, WWE

David LevinJun 7, 2018

Last night opened more doors and left more unanswered questions in the whole CM Punk/Kevin Nash situation on Monday Night Raw. And in doing so, it also allowed us to witness another great confrontation between Punk and John Cena, which makes me wonder a few things about this rivalry.

Admittedly, I did not see the entire match last night; however, I did see enough of the evening to know there are many new twists that have been revealed and that when all is said and done, you will see Kevin Nash in the ring with Punk, and somehow Triple H will get physically involved in this scenario.

And while we are on the subject of Punk and his nemesis John Cena, it begs the question, are we seeing the “new” Rock/Austin feud that brought millions of WWE fans to their feet for years?

There are similarities and there are major differences. But you cannot deny it has that type of drama, charisma and coolness to it that we have not seen in years. Maybe the closest thing to it was Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels a few years back.

I actually liked the show last night. We are seeing that Alberto Del Rio can really be the “heel” that the WWF had years ago. In the "Attitude Era," fans still cheered the heel and loved seeing him in action. Del Rio has become the “target” as John Cena has said, and that makes me think the Aristocrat will be a champion for more than a cup of coffee.

When it comes to Cena and Punk, you get the sense there is magic there. No one sells for Punk like Cena, something he wanted to do for months and worked to get that type of rivalry. Remember, it was Cena who was pushing to work an angle with Punk around the same time R-Truth was being given the push to top-card status.

The connection is undeniable and the work between the two is getting better.

Last night, with John Laurinaitis and Del Rio ringside, we saw there are more questions to be answered. Nash supposedly was injured in a car crash, Triple H left the building and Laurinaitis sat and watched the main event with a smug look on his face and only interfered when Del Rio took the attack to Cena too far.

Leads me still to believe Stephanie McMahon is calling the shots, even as Punk said, and that her “bidder” is playing a better role than Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco used to in years past.

Now we wait to see how the “accident” angle is played out and if Triple H being stabbed in the back by his wife and father-in-law. And, as if we needed any more drama, what other members of the old “clique” will make their way back into the spotlight in the next few weeks?

But while we wait for the pieces to be put into place, it’s great to sit and wonder how this all will play out.
