NFL Supplemental Draft: Last Thing Terrelle Pryor Needs Is an Ego Boost

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Terrelle Pryor already has too much hype for leaving Ohio State.

The Oakland Raiders reaching for him in the third round of the supplemental draft certainly won't quell Pryor's huge ego.

Pryor became this way all the way back in 2008, when he was the No. 1 QB prospect and arguably the No. 1 overall prospect that every college wanted to recruit for its program.

He was drawing comparisons to Vince Young in high school, who at that time was a hot commodity, winning the BCS national championship in stunning fashion vs. USC and becoming the third overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft.  He was also playing rather admirably for the Tennessee Titans.

When Pryor narrowed his choices down to Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan and Oregon, Sports Illustrated dubbed his coming choice “unquestionably the most anticipated signing day announcement in history.”

He made these teams wait over a month and a half past National Signing Day on his decision to attend The Ohio State University. If this does not scream cockiness, I don’t know what does.

With so much hype behind him, can you blame Pryor for having such a massive ego heading into his college career?

The problem is, he did not check it at the door.

Pryor thought he was a big shot, and he acted like one around campus.

He drove an estimated eight different cars in his three years at the school, none of which he paid for personally. He drove a Nissan 350Z to practices and meetings while holding a license that was suspended by the State of Ohio.

You want to talk about vanity? He allegedly made thousands of dollars putting his autograph on memorabilia for an OSU booster.

Pryor performed rather well on the football field but was sort of a jerk about it. Listen to his post-Sugar Bowl interview where he told reporters that he just wanted to make his opponent (Arkansas) look bad.

Along with the memorabilia and sketchy car situation, Pryor also decided to trade autographs for ink at a Columbus tattoo parlor.

This was one of the final straws that forced the NCAA to suspend him for five games during the 2011 season.

Pryor decided to cut his losses, leave school and hire an agent.

Guess who that agent is?

Yup, Drew Rosenhaus. The biggest jerk you can find in the business. He will get his clients paid, but he has just as much of an ego as Pryor. It seems like a match made in heaven, but it won’t work in the NFL.

The Raiders selected Pryor in the supplemental draft as a positional player, according to ESPN's John Clayton, and he is really going to need to eat his humble pie in order to find success in the NFL.

The odds are already stacked against him if he does not want to use his freakish athleticism and build to help the team in any way possible, including a conversion to wide receiver.

So, Terrelle Pryor, if you want to use the fact that you were a third-round supplemental draft pick to boost your ego, by all means, go for it. Just don’t be surprised when you fail.
