US Open 2011: Will Andy Roddick Ever Win Another U.S Open?

Nicholas GossJun 6, 2018

Andy Roddick's 2003 US Open title was the last triumph for an American in a Grand Slam tennis tournament, and there is little reason to believe that Roddick will end the longest Grand Slam drought in American history this year.

Roddick has played in four major finals since 2004, but has been unable to seal the victory each time.

"He certainly has the weapons," tennis legend Jimmy Connors stated recently. "I think he's lost a bit of confidence."

Connors was Roddick's coach for two years but resigned in 2008.

Roddick is now 28 years old, not exactly young for a tennis player. When you watch Roddick play, it seems he is not as focused as should be, and he lacks the competitive fire he had in his younger days.

"There's other things on his mind probably that are taking up space," Connors said. "Tennis is a 365-day-a-year job. If you're not willing to put in that time and make that happen over the course of that year, other things creep in there, they take your mind off your business, and all of a sudden tennis is not the most important thing."

Since his major win in 2003, Roddick tied the knot with swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker, so understandably there have been bigger things in his personal life taking away from his tennis.

This US Open may be Roddick's last shot at winning the tournament; his record this season is barely over .500, and he's reached just one semifinal.

Despite Roddick still being a solid tennis player, there are several top players he doesn't stand a chance against. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all pose a serious obstacle to Roddick's quest for another major title.

Roddick has lost to Federer in three Grand Slam finals, including the 2008 Wimbledon (a match he could have easily won but ultimately lost 16-14 in the final set).

One of his most recent tournaments ended quite early for Roddick, as he was eliminated in the first round of the combined ATP World Tour and WTA Tour Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati last week.

The frustration was clearly evident on Roddick's face when he was bounced in Cincinnati and it may be a preview of things to come.

Roddick doesn't have the mental toughness to win a major, especially when and if he has to play one of the favorites like Federer. His confidence is severely lacking at the moment.

Roddick has had a great career, and being labeled as an underachiever surely bothers him, but a great performance and win at the 2011 US Open would change the way we view his career upon his retirement.

The American will have the full support of the fans in New York next week, and he not only has the expectations of making the final for himself, he must carry the hopes of a nation which is starving for tennis success on the biggest stage.
