WWE Tag Team Wrestling: 15 Teams the WWE Needs To Revamp the Division

Cody GuinnJun 1, 2018

Ah, tag team wrestling—what a lost art in the WWE nowadays. I remember when I looked forward to seeing The Hardy Boyz against Edge and Christian more than any main event on Monday Night Raw. Or even not too long ago seeing the return of Degeneration-X do battle with Rated RKO. Since then, though, tag team wrestling—at least in the WWE—has died.

The "PG-era" for some reason killed the tag team division and led to having more one-on-one storylines and hardly any consistent tag teams. Lately though, since Triple-H took control of the day-to-day operations of the company, rumors have surfaced that one of his top priorities is to revamp the tag team division.

Well, of course he does. That's how he became a legend. Without DX, neither Triple-H nor the Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels would have reached the success they did in the business. Many other stars have also got their start from tag team wrestling such as Bret Hart, Edge, Jeff Hardy, and The Miz.

Also, in my opinion, there isn't a more exciting form of wrestling than a good tag team match. Triple-H isn't going to revamp the division with just homegrown talent. He will need to venture out and try to lure some teams from some different organizations.

Here are the 15 teams I believe that Triple-H and the WWE need if they really want to revamp the division and turn tag team wrestling in the WWE legit and prestigious once again.

15. Dark City Fight Club: Jon Davis and Kory Chavis

1 of 15

DCFC is a tag team on the independent scene who's been making a name for themselves since forming in 2008. Together, they have won six tag team championships on the indy scene.

While you more than likely have never heard of the DCFC, the WWE needs to bring in teams that maybe the WWE Universe don't know in an attempt to get them over as either a heel team or possibly the next big name in tag team wrestling.

14. Deuce 'N Domino

2 of 15

Deuce 'N Domino are former WWE tag team champions as well as four-time tag team champions in the WWE development leagues.

Deuce 'N Domino were very over with the crowd for a while due to their entrance in the old car, the "Greaser" persona, as well as having a super-hot manager on roller skates.

While they were never the "face" of the tag team division, the WWE universe would be very happy to see the return of Deuce 'N Domino—especially if Cherry came with them.

13. The Young Bucks

3 of 15

The Young Bucks, also known as Generation Me, are a high-flying, cruiserweight tag team who are best known for their stint with TNA between 2009 and 2011.

They are four-time tag team champions on the independent circuit and are known to have a very loyal fan base.

The Bucks have received some negative reviews in the past for being disrespectful to some of the veterans, most notably Rob Van Dam in TNA, as he stated following the Bucks' release from the organization.

There's no question the Young Bucks would bring a lot of excitement to the WWE tag team division and being as young as they are, could have a long, bright future in the tag team picture.

12. Team 3D

4 of 15

Quite possibly the greatest tag team in professional wrestling history: Team 3D. Also known as The Dudley Boyz, Brother Ray and Brother Devon are an amazing 23-time world tag team champions.

So why so low on the list? Because obviously Team 3D are past their prime, but that doesn't mean they couldn't come in, get a huge reaction from the crowd and possibly get a new team over.

While I don't expect a future huge title run from the Dudleys, it would be awesome to see Bubba push D-Von one last time in a WWE ring and tell him to "get the tables!"

11. LAX: Homicide and Hernandez

5 of 15

Homicide and Hernandez, most commonly known as the Latin American Xchange, were one of the greatest tag teams in TNA history. The former TNA tag team champions were named the 2006 Tag Team of the Year by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

While some might have a problem with the gimmick of LAX, and the WWE will more than likely try and make it less stereotypical before putting them on television, LAX work very well together and really would shake up the WWE tag team division.

10. Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder

6 of 15

Formerly known as the Major Brothers, as well as the Edge Heads, Hawkins and Ryder are former WWE tag team champions. While Hawkins hasn't done much since the team split, Ryder has been a major contributor to the new "Reality Era."

Ryder has a huge following, even though he rarely appears on WWE television. He's probably most famous for his YouTube video series, "Z! True Long Island Story." Hawkins actually has appeared in a few episodes.

Fans have been begging for a Ryder push and the best way to do that would be to get the Major Broskies back together and push both Ryder and Hawkins in the tag team division.

9. The Briscoe Brothers

7 of 15

One of the most famous tag teams, if not the most famous, in Ring of Honor history are the 15-time tag team champions The Briscoe Brothers.

Jay and Mark Briscoe have been making waves in Ring of Honor since it began and are an ROH-record six-time ROH tag team champions.

The Briscoe Brothers have a huge following everywhere they go and also win everywhere they go. The WWE would more than likely be no different, and the Briscoe Brothers could be future WWE tag team champions.

8. The Usos

8 of 15

One of the brightest tag teams in the WWE currently are the Uso twins. The sons of former WWE superstar Rikishi, Jimmy and Jey Uso look like the future of the tag team division.

Already, the Usos have a major fan base due to their entrance which they perform the Uso Siva Tau on the stage before walking to the ring.

The WWE can do a lot with the Usos if they use them correctly as well as give them time to continue to develop. In time, Jimmy and Jey could be WWE tag team champions.

7. Ricky/Richie Steamboat, Jr. and Tyler Black/Seth Rollins

9 of 15

The team of Tyler Black and Ricky Steamboat Jr. is one of my favorite tag teams currently and I would love to see them called up to the main roster. It is also the one team on this list I can see splitting up and both men eventually becoming a world champion.

Former Ring of Honor world champion Tyler Black, currently working as Seth Rollins, is a young, agile performer who makes everything he does in the ring look amazing.

Ricky Steamboat Jr., currently working as Rickie Steamboat, is son of Hall of Famer Ricky Steamboat, and is also of of the most agile superstars currently in the FCW.

The WWE's development league is top-notch and hopefully soon, Black and Steamboat will be called up and get a chance to show the WWE Universe that they are not only the future of tag team wrestling, but possibly the future of the entire business.

6. The American Wolves: Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards

10 of 15

If you have been keeping up with ROH lately, you'll see that the two men are currently in a battle for the ROH World Championship. So, that should just give you a hint about how good the two are as a team.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter 2009 Tag Team of the Year and former ROH tag team champions, The American Wolves are one of the best-known Ring of Honor tag teams as well as two of the company's best wrestlers.

The two are coming of one of the best singles matches of the year at Best in the World 2011 when Richards defeated Edwards to become ROH world champion.

If the two came to the WWE, they would have a chance to be one of the best tag teams in history, but also have a great chance of continuing their already-successful single careers as well.

5. Beer Money: James Storm and Robert Roode

11 of 15

Since their formation in 2008, Beer Money has been one of the most successful tag teams in wrestling. The 2008 PWI Tag Team of the Year and four-time TNA tag team champions, James Storm and Robert Roode both have made careers of being successful tag team competitors.

Storm, who was part of America's Most Wanted, and Roode, who was a part of Team Canada, have recently been linked to being on Triple-H's short list of guys he is very interested in signing once their contracts with TNA are up.

Both men are excellent tag team as well as singles wrestlers, and would be a huge boost to the WWE tag team division.

4. Paul London and Brian Kendrick

12 of 15

London and Kendrick are one of the most exciting tag teams in the world today and the former WWE tag team champions are definitely best when together.

After winning the WWE Tag Team Championship in 2006, the team held the titles for 331 days, the longest reign in WWE Tag Team Championship history since the title's inception in 2002.

London and Kendrick are crazy fast and bring excitement in every match they are in. Bringing them both back to the WWE would be huge for the tag team division and could lead to another long title reign for the two.

3. Kings of Wrestling: Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli

13 of 15

One of the best tag teams in ROH history and the 2010 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Tag Team of the Year, KOW is a team that could be on their way to the WWE.

Rumors have been all over the Internet lately about Hero and Castagnoli possibly signing WWE contracts and being the first breath of life into the dead tag team division.

KOW are two-time ROH tag team champions and held the titles for 363 days before finally being defeated in a championship match.

One of the best pure wrestling teams in the world today, the Kings of Wrestling would no doubt be one of the best acquisitions the WWE could make and would really turn the tag team division upside down.

2. The Motor City Machine Guns: Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin

14 of 15

If you're looking for some of the best tag team wrestling moves in the business, then look no further than the PWI 2010 Tag Team of the Year: the Motor City Machine Guns.

The fast-paced style of this duo is breathtaking and watching these two men go, you realize why they are considered to be one of the most entertaining tag teams in wrestling over the past few years.

When both men are healthy, there might not be a better team in wrestling today than the Motor City Machine Guns.

While currently Sabin is rehabbing a torn ACL and MCL, the beginning of 2012 could mark the arrival of the Machine Guns to the WWE and would definitely light a fire in the WWE tag team division.

1. World's Greatest Tag Team: Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas

15 of 15

Athleticism, ability, chemistry and charisma: four major factors in being a successful tag team—four major factors that Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas have. The self-proclaimed World's Greatest Tag Team has nearly lived up to the name, but one more trip to the WWE might help solidify that claim.

Haas and Benjamin are two-time WWE tag team champions, the 2006 PWI Tag Team of the Year and current ROH tag team champions. Both men were very under-utilized in the WWE, as many thought Benjamin had all the intangibles to be a future world champion, but he never panned out.

Both men came to Ring of Honor in August 2010, reformed their tag team and haven't looked back since. On April 1st, 2011, Haas and Benjamin defeated the Kings of Wrestling to become ROH tag team champions.

The World's Greatest Tag Team must continue to defeat the best tag teams in wrestling to keep that name, and right now, I'd say that place is probably Ring of Honor.

But, if somehow the WWE was able to lure some of these teams to their company, there is no doubt that Haas and Benjamin would be a major team to focus on bringing back if the WWE hopes to revamp the tag team division.
