BCS Preseason Report: If You're Not Cheating, Then You're Not Trying

Dan SmithJun 7, 2018

What an ugly offseason we have endured while awaiting the next college football season. It is hard to figure out which entity is more corrupt: college football programs or the American political system?

I'm gonna go with politics because those guys make the rules that they break, but the college football programs are just breaking the rules.

One thing I do when I complain is I give a solution. With the mess that is recruiting in college football, the first thing I want to say is that the last thing we need is more rules. If the powers that be decide to allow players to be paid then that would be a disaster for this reason: The NCAA is unable to enforce all of the rules they currently have in place so adding more rules would just be idiotic.

When you have rules then you create work. If a rule exists, there has to be a body that enforces that rule.

So anyone who thinks simply paying the players will fix anything is wrong. The problem the NCAA has is there are too many rules. Please understand any solutions that call for more rules will fail.

So if we cannot add more rules to fix the problem, what are we left with?

There are too many rules in place, but how in the world can you go through the massive NCAA compliance manual and begin the process of expunging the rules?

Simple, right? You just go through and find the rules that don't make any sense.

The sarcasm was dripping pretty heavy in that last line, sorry about that.

The issue with corruption is: How do you find a trustworthy organization to fix the corruption? The question is: How long before an overseeing organization on corruption becomes corrupt themselves?

Because that is what corruption does. It starts out as this thing that everyone says that we need to stop. Then we pull up our sleeves, and we start to fix the corruption. Then we find out that those who are profiting off of the corruption put up a fight to keep their gravy train going. That is when those put into position to fix the corruption are presented a choice: Stand up for their morals or profit off of the corruption.

How corrupt is the BCS? Ohio State was allowed to play five players in the Sugar Bowl who will have to sit out the first five games of this season. One of those players, Terrelle Pryor, was so corrupt the Buckeyes kicked him off the team.

The Raiders just drafted him. Here's an interesting note on Pryor's college football career: He got Jim Tressel fired by going to Ohio State, and he got Rich Rodriguez fired by not going to Michigan.

Now, the BCS is not linked to the NCAA in any way. For example, when Connecticut beat Butler in the college basketball tournament, UConn was the NCAA basketball champ.

When Auburn beat Oregon in the BCS title game, the Tigers became BCS champs.

The AP poll is the only link the NCAA has with college football because the AP is not included in the BCS formula for getting 1 versus 2.

College football needs to separate themselves from the NCAA altogether. The BCS should be the governing body for college football, and there should be a new compliance manual created. This solution could pave the way for college football players being paid.

As a part of the NCAA, if you pay a college football player, you have to pay a women's soccer player as well. That has always been the problem with paying the athletes through the NCAA.

What I do not like about my solution is that it is a coward's approach. I am saying college football, in its current state, is beyond repair, so I want to tear it down and rebuild it. There is no guarantee that a BCS-run college football entity would be free of corruption.

I will say that the NCAA-run college football entity is full of corruption. The NCAA-run college football entity is like a computer that has become so riddled with viruses that it will never run right again. I am saying let's go and buy a new computer.

Well, now I can step down from my soapbox and start talking about the stuff that happens between the lines.

The SEC is still the best conference, and no one is even close. The newly formed Pac-12 and the reconfigured Big 10 appear to be fighting for the second slot. The Mountain West added Boise State but lost BYU. The Big 12 is closer to vanishing than they are to being a power conference, but they are still better than the ACC and Big East.

Of course, by adding TCU in 2012, the Big East might have at least one team that will be in the national championship debate.

I have been a honk for Boise State for a few years now. Once again, I think they will be the best team in the country. They will have to play an SEC team in the BCS title game, and those SEC teams don't lose those title games anymore.

But I am going with the Broncos as the ultimate BCS buster.
