UFC 91—Expect Fireworks for the Main Card

Jessy MorrisNov 13, 2008

We learned about two months ago that UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture had settled his problems with the UFC and that he was returning.

Randy was welcomed back with a UFC 91 title defense against the freak of nature, Brock Lesnar.

A lot of people said it was probably the most anticipated fight in UFC history and it would break attendance records. On Nov. 15, as much as the Couture-Lesnar fight should be a classic, other very interesting fights will take place, and here's a look at the main card fights.

Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory

It was initially supposed to be an undercard fight, but when TUF Season 7 winner Amir Sadollah was forced out of his fight with newcomer Nick Catone, Hazelett versus McCrory was moved up to the main card.

This should be a very exciting fight between two young fighters who are the future of the welterweight division. Both fighters have impressive wins in the UFC and will be looking to get another one on Nov. 15.

Hazelett is heading into this fight with much better BJJ skills and Tamdan is the better striker. He has the reach advantage, so it's hard to predict what will happen and who will win.

For the record, I feel Hazelett will take the fight to the ground and win it. McCrory has long limbs, which will be easier for Dustin to grab and submit.

Demian Maia vs. Nate Quarry

Am I the only one who's pumped up for this fight?

This is gonna be great: Maia the BJJ fighter against Quarry the striker. For some reason, some people are counting Quarry out of this fight, but they seem to forget that he only has one loss in the UFC and that's against Rich Franklin. Quarry has beaten some good fighters and has great skills.

Maia is coming off three impressive wins in the UFC, all by submission. Without a doubt, Maia will be looking to take the fight to the ground. If he does, he will probably lock a submission and win.

Quarry is looking to keep the fight standing and use his superior boxing to KO Maia.

It's really hard for me to pick a winner, but I'll pick Nate Quarry. I think he'll be able to keep the fight standing and win. He'll probably be better on the ground then Maia will be on his feet.

Josh Hendricks vs. Gabriel Gonzaga

I don't know much about Hendricks other than he's a good BJJ fighter and a training partner of Randy Couture's.

Here I have to go with "Napao." He's been on the road back to the title since losing to Couture and Werdum and think he'll win at UFC 91.

It's hard to say anything because I don't know much about Josh, but Gonzaga is probably a better fighter overall and will finish the fight by submission.

Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson

This should probably be the fight of the night. Both guys are evenly matched. Both have good submissions and good striking. It's hard to pick a winner.

Florian and Stevenson have impressive wins against very good fighters and are probably looking at a title shot after that against BJ Penn or Sean Sherk (for more info, check the article written by Brian Oswald).

I really hope Florian gets the win and fights for the gold afterwards. I think he deserves it. I'm picking Florian to win by decision.

Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar for the UFC Heavyweight title

Where to begin? So much has been said about this fight that I won't talk about it, I'll just go with who will win.

Yes, Lesnar is big, bad, young, and very strong, and seems to be an unstoppable machine, but Randy Couture is a veteran and is very good as the underdog.

He has made a career at exploiting his opponent's weak points and will do the same against Brock on Saturday.

I honestly don't mind who wins. I'm a big Randy fan and a big Lesnar fan from his WWE stint. It should be very interesting and I'll go with experience and say Randy will pull it off and win a decision.

As I am writing this article, we are 50 hours away from UFC 91, and I'm pumped up for the event. I'll be watching it live with a bunch of friends. I'm looking forward to every fight and hope the Lesnar-Couture main event doesn't disappoint.

So for everybody watching the event on Saturday, I say, enjoy the show and for the people who won't be watching, I say, I hope you miss an awesome show.
