WWE: 11 Reasons Triple H Isn't Behind Kevin Nash's Actions at SummerSlam
Kevin Nash gave us all a little WCW/WWF throwback when he returned to WWE TV at SummerSlam and laid out CM Punk.
The attack allowed Alberto Del Rio to leave the pay-per-view as the undisputed WWE Champion, but perhaps more importantly, it prevented CM Punk from doing the same.
Nash’s surprising actions have conspiracy written all over them, and the wrestling world is abuzz (and divided) about who actually sent Nash to powerbomb Punk.
Was it John Laurinaitis? Stephanie McMahon? Vince McMahon? Triple H?
Well, today we’re going to focus on the possibility that it’s the last guy…or isn’t.
Here are 11 reasons why Triple H isn’t the man behind Nash’s shocking attack on Punk at SummerSlam.
11. The “Corporate Kliq” Isn’t as Relevant Today
1 of 11“The Kliq” featured Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, Triple H, Sean Waltman (X-Pac) and Scott Hall, and had a ton of backstage influence in the WWF in the 1990s.
In terms of wrestling history, it’s a very well-known group that took part in one of the most famous moments in wrestling history, the Madison Square Garden Incident.
But as far as the majority of today’s wrestling audience goes, I’m not sure they’d care as much about a reincarnated Kliq—which some are calling the “Corporate Kliq”—with Triple H, Nash and possibly Stephanie McMahon.
For some of the older fans, a possible “Corporate Kliq” would be nice for nostalgic purposes. But in case you didn’t notice by the less than stellar reaction Nash got on Monday’s Raw, a good chunk of today’s wrestling fans have no idea what the connection is between Triple H, Nash and the McMahon family.
Recreating that faction isn’t going to draw now like it would have several years ago.
10. Plenty of People Could Have Sent The Text From Triple H’s Phone
2 of 11Even if it is eventually revealed that the text telling Nash to take out “the champ” came from Triple H’s phone, how can we be 100 percent certain that it was indeed Triple H who sent it?
Think of all the people who would have access to Triple H’s phone: Johnny Ace, Stephanie, Vince and theoretically, anyone in the WWE locker room.
Though Triple H would seemingly be the No. 1 culprit in this case—and make no mistake about it, most people already think he’s behind Nash’s actions—there are too many possibilities to jump to any conclusions about Triple H’s role in Nash’s attack on Punk.
9. Triple H Is a Face
3 of 11As soon as the rumblings of a CM Punk/Triple H rivalry began, we all assumed that Triple H would be turning heel.
But there’s absolutely no guarantee that Triple H is going to be the bad guy in the situation, even if it seems like that’s what makes the most sense.
Triple H hasn’t been heel since I can’t remember—2005, maybe? Even before that?—and I’m not sure he’s going to turn heel this time around, either.
Remember, we often complain about the abundance of heels in the WWE, so adding Triple H would only make the main event heel scene even more crowded.
He could very well remain a “good boss,” and can even feud with Punk down the road if the two are both faces.
8. Stephanie McMahon’s Interactions With CM Punk
4 of 11Stephanie McMahon has appeared in a couple of backstage segments with CM Punk in which she drops some subtle hints that she’s involved in Kevin Nash’s attack on CM Punk.
There are several different routes this can go, though (in no particular order):
1. Stephanie sent the text to Nash on her own.
2. Stephanie sent the text to Nash at Triple H’s request.
3. Stephanie sent the text on someone else’s behalf (Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, etc.).
4. Stephanie did not send the text.
Notice that the majority of those options do NOT involve Triple H being the culprit behind the text to Nash.
I firmly believe that Stephanie could wind up being the main player in this entire feud, whether she’s on the side of Punk, Triple H or even her father. And it could certainly be Vinny Mac’s daughter who wanted to screw Punk over.
7. Alberto Del Rio and John Cena Had the Most To Gain By Screwing Punk Over
5 of 11Even though CM Punk had taken some shots at Triple H’s wife, Stephanie McMahon, screwing Punk over at SummerSlam wouldn’t really benefit Triple H in any way.
It’s not like he’s an active competitor who took out Punk to win the WWE Championship for himself or even for a friend for that matter.
Alberto Del Rio and John Cena, on the other hand, had legitimate reasons to make sure Punk didn’t leave Los Angeles with the WWE title.
Cena had lost to Punk at two consecutive pay-per-views, and sending Kevin Nash the text could have been his way of assuring he had the last laugh (at least for now), even if he didn’t have the title.
As for Del Rio, he was the Money in the Bank briefcase holder, and thus, had all the motivation in the world to seek out Nash’s help.
6. The Text Read “The Champ” Rather Than CM Punk
6 of 11Though this a detail that some of us could have easily missed, Kevin Nash said that the text he received told him to lay out “the champ” after the WWE Championship Match at SummerSlam.
Notice that it did not say CM Punk.
Therefore, whoever sent the text could have intended for Nash to attack Punk, John Cena or simply whoever won the match. We simply don’t know yet.
Presumably, though, Triple H would have told Nash to “take out Punk” (if he won the match) if he was indeed the one who sent the text.
That little phrase “the champ” might not seem like much, but it’s certainly going to play a major role in this storyline.
5. Triple H Would Have Attacked Punk Himself
7 of 11Knowing the Triple H that we’ve seen on WWE TV over the past several years, I wouldn’t think that he’d need Kevin Nash to do his dirty work.
Clearly, this could change if there are plans to turn Triple H heel. But that’s not the case at the moment.
So, if Triple H wanted to screw CM Punk over, would he have asked someone else to do it or would he have done it himself?
Maybe it’s just me, but I would have pictured SummerSlam ending a lot differently if Triple H was the man behind the attack. Quite simply, he would have laid out Punk himself and then called on Alberto Del Rio to cash in.
But that’s not what happened.
4. Triple H Re-Hired Punk
8 of 11One of the main reasons why Vince McMahon was relieved of his duties as WWE Chairman was because CM Punk left the company with the WWE Championship in tow after his contract expired.
And who exactly was it that re-hired Punk? Yep, it was Triple H.
At least for storyline purposes, it wouldn’t make sense for Triple H to bring back Punk because “it’s good for business” and then have his friend attack him, causing him to lose the WWE title.
In fact, that wouldn’t be good for business. At all.
Triple H knows that Punk is the hottest act in the WWE right now, and thus, should do everything in his power to make sure Punk is at the top of the company as WWE Champion. Not vice versa.
3. It’s Way Too Obvious
9 of 11The WWE and, perhaps more specifically, the creative team often have a tendency to do the obvious.
For example, Alberto Del Rio winning Raw’s Money in the Bank match or Mark Henry becoming the No. 1 contender for Randy Orton’s World Heavyweight Championship.
In some cases, the most obvious solution is the right one. In others, it’s not.
This is one of those situations when the obvious answer—Triple H sent the text—is undoubtedly the wrong one.
In all honesty, having Triple H as the man behind Kevin Nash would be lazy booking and a clear cop-out by the creative team.
And you know what? I think they know that.
2. This is Just a Smaller Part of a Much Bigger Storyline
10 of 11This entire “Who sent the text?” debacle is not the be-all, end-all of the beef between Triple H, CM Punk, Kevin Nash and whoever else might be involved.
It’s just the beginning of one major storyline.
If Triple H was indeed revealed as the “mystery texter” within the next couple of weeks, then that’s it. The Triple H/CM Punk match would still take place down the road, but the drama and the climax would be over.
The WWE creative team has to build this feud like a good book: slowly work your way up to the climax and then shock us when we find out what that climax actually is.
Having Triple H as the man behind the text would be like reading a book that never has that jaw-dropping moment.
1. Vince McMahon Is
11 of 11Maybe the second obvious choice in this situation, behind Triple H, is Vince McMahon.
He’s been written off of WWE TV “for good” for four straight summers now, and he’s returned each and every time. There’s no way that’s changing this time around.
You don’t just write Mr. McMahon off TV forever by saying he’s been replaced by Triple H. You write him off temporarily, bring him back several months down the road and have him feud with his son-in-law.
If I was a betting man, I’d put my money on Vince being revealed as the one who sent Kevin Nash to destroy Punk because Punk was the main reason Vince was relieved of his duties as WWE Chairman.
After all, you know Vinny Mac can’t stay away from the limelight for too much longer.
