WWE: 9 Reasons John Morrison Can Return to WWE Title Glory

Robert AitkenJun 4, 2018

The year of 2011 began well for John Morrison as Morrison nearly became WWE Champion, losing to then-champion The Miz in a Falls Count Anywhere match to begin the first RAW of the year. In the time that has passed since, Morrison has been up and down the card, even missing out on some events with injuries. Be it injuries, cold shoulders or any other setback, Morrison has been pushed toward the main event multiple times, only to find a reason for not grabbing the coveted world championship.

After multiple setbacks from his latest injury, Morrison achieved his first victory back last Monday on RAW over R-Truth. This can be considered the beginning of yet another Morrison push to some, while critics may see this as another place for false hope from WWE's version of fool's gold. Can the Prince of Parkour finally deliver the world championship that his fans have been waiting to see from him? Here are nine reasons that Morrison's golden moment is just a matter of time.

1) He Can Do Things Nobody Else Can

1 of 9

This is the first reason, mainly because it is what brought him to this point. Morrison's extreme athleticism and unique moves set him apart from the competition and have made him a person to watch throughout his WWE career. The exact reason for making Morrison unique is the exact reason that Morrison is always a contender for the WWE Championship. His offense can match up with pretty much anyone and it gives him the ability to have a good match almost at will. That quality is very important if you want to be crowned the champion on a show like RAW.

2) He's a Tough Enough Alum

2 of 9

Tough Enough returned in April and crowned Andy Leavine as a new breakout WWE star. Back in 2002, Morrison was crowned as a co-champion of Tough Enough's third season. WWE is set on featuring their talent that came out of Tough Enough. It's more than a little bit ironic that The Miz, the runner-up in Tough Enough season four, was WWE Champion when the show debuted. With a world championship, Morrison can further cement how the Tough Enough route is a profitable way to become a star in WWE.

3) He's a Fan Favorite

Morrison is a favorite with many fans. His parkour moves, his cool attire and his slow motion entrance all make for a likable superstar. Morrison recently announced that his fanbase would no longer be called "MoFos," but rather the more kid-friendly "JoMoSapiens." The new name is a play on homo sapiens, the scientific name for humans. Whatever they are called, they are quietly one of the largest fanbases in all of WWE, including a rare hybrid of young and old fans.

4) His Gimmick Is Already Good

4 of 9

Some superstars have to change their gimmick and tweak their on-air personalities in order to be considered world title material. Just look at how The Miz changed his look and attitude before winning his world championship. Morrison doesn't have to worry about that. In fact, he got that part out of the way already. When Morrison won the ECW Championship as Johnny Nitro, Nitro morphed into Morrison just 48 hours later and has seldom changed since.

5) Distractions Are Gone

5 of 9

I could have directly referred to Melina, but I didn't want to be mean. Melina's release from WWE will either make or break Morrison's career going forward. Morrison has been dating Melina for years now, but her influence on him has apparently had more of a negative effect than a good one. It is believed that Melina's backstage heat led to Morrison's now-infamous cold shoulder around WrestleMania time. Who knows what else Melina has cost him over the years. Her release could have been WWE's warning shot to Morrison in order to straighten him out and keep him in line. It will either lead to a world championship or a burial and release. There's nothing really in between anymore.

6) He's Still Young

6 of 9

Morrison is a seasoned veteran in WWE already, but will turn just 32 in October. Morrison joined WWE at such a young age that he was able to mature over time and learn the ins and outs of the business. Even with injury problems and a move set not designed for long careers, Morrison is very resilient and can last for a few years if he can sustain enough momentum to keep him in the title picture and stay there.

7) He Has Been Buried Long Enough

7 of 9

Following his match at WrestleMania, which had him in a tag team match with Trish Stratus and Snooki from Jersey Shore, Morrison was booked out of a cage match at Extreme Rules. The following week had Morrison take away R-Truth's spot in that match, which turned R-Truth heel and ended up costing Morrison the WWE Championship from R-Truth's interference.

This all ended up leading to R-Truth's rise as a top heel at Morrison's expense. Now that Morrison is back and healthy, Morrison can gain some credibility back from R-Truth and move back up. He did the difficult task of getting someone over as a main eventer without actually being one himself. That alone merits a good shot for Morrison in the coming weeks and months.

8) He Has Already Owned the Mid-Card

8 of 9

I like to call this the Kofi Kingston Complex. Kingston has practically dominated the mid-card and can't do much more at his current level. Now, Kingston stays lower than the main event, but is kept from keeping a stranglehold on the mid-card in order to push other names. Morrison's three reigns as Intercontinental Champion combine for over 200 total days as champion. His five tag team title reigns with MNM and his partnership with The Miz make him one of the best tag team wrestlers in recent memory.

There isn't much more for Morrison than the world championship picture. If there is anything new for Morrison, that's one of the last uncharted areas.

9) He's Nearly Won the Title Before

9 of 9

His match with The Miz was already mentioned, but there have been multiple times where Morrison has proven that a world championship is in his grasp. In his rare title match chances, Morrison impresses and gets a charge from the crowd as he stands one second away from winning a world title. One of these days, the hand of that referee will hit the mat three times when Morrison is covering the champion. If that will happen soon is anyone's guess, but there are certainly enough reasons to see it.
