5 Words for Tim Tebow

Erin McLaughlinJun 7, 2018

After two preseason games, the Denver Broncos quarterback situation is starting to get really clear.

Kyle Orton is clearly the starter and solidified that even further with his performance on Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills. Orton led the Broncos to two touchdown drives in the first half and was 10 of 13 for 135 yards and a touchdown.

Then, in a surprising move, Brady Quinn entered the game with two minutes left in the half ahead of fan favorite Tim Tebow. Quinn put together a very impressive drive and got the Broncos all the way down to the Buffalo two-yard line. Unfortunately for Quinn, the drive ended with an interception on a tipped pass.

Quinn was noticeably disappointed after having such a good two-minute drill for it to end that way. But give Quinn credit, he came out in the second half and led the Broncos to a field goal and a touchdown in the third quarter. Quinn finished 10 of 16 for 130 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Tebow then entered the game in the fourth quarter and really didn't do anything.

He went 1 of 2 passing for 10 yards. That is not to say he didn't have more chances to throw, but he was sacked. On another play, he scrambled for seven yards. Tebow just wasn't able to get anything going.

Based on all that, it seems that not only is it clear who Denver's starter is, but also it is getting really close to seeing who the backup is. I know many of the fans believe that it is Tebow time. It is clear that John Fox doesn't see it that way at all.

Although Fox has been kind in his words about Tebow, it seems as though he does not want Tebow anywhere near the playing field.

The fact is that Quinn has outperformed him in every way. Quinn has consistently fared better in practice. Both Quinn and Tebow have had an opportunity to work with and against the second and third string.

Quinn has clearly outplayed Tebow in both games. I am curious to see what excuses the Tebow fans come up with on this one. I am not a hater of the kid, but it seems like he does no wrong by his fans. Last week they said, "But Quinn was against the third team."

At the same time, that means he has third-stringers with him so it is all relative.

What will they say this week after Quinn performed better against the twos than Tebow did against the threes? I can't wait to see this argument.

Oh wait, I forgot! The argument Tebow fans will use is that Quinn has been allowed to throw more passes. That is true but the reason Quinn is getting more passes is because he is keeping his drives going.

Even though Tebow is the fan favorite, Fox is clearly not ready for Tebow time. The way I read Fox is that he doesn't want Tebow anywhere near the playing field. He clearly likes Quinn for the backup.

This has to leave Tebow in a tough spot. He knows that he is being outperformed daily even though he was supposed to start according to fans.

The reality for Tebow is these five words: "WELCOME TO THE PRACTICE SQUAD."
