US Open Tennis 2011: Top 10 Matches We'd Like to See

Josh SchochJun 7, 2018

With the 2011 US Tennis Open set to begin next week, these are the 10 matches we are all hoping to watch. We don't know when these matches would come just yet, but we still want to see them.

The US Open is made special by the much-anticipated matches with big storylines or incredible talent. We always look to see when our favorite players could match up, and for good reason.

These 10 matches are the ones that we want to see most at the US Open this year.

Rafael Nadal vs. Mardy Fish

1 of 10

In their match at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Mardy Fish beat Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-4. Fish is ranked No. 7 in the world, while Nadal has a hefty lead on him and is ranked No. 2 in the world.

Nadal said after the match that he needs to improve his game before the US Open, saying:

"

"I have to play my game. I have to play aggressive, I have to move faster...I have to play with more intensity and less mistakes."  Crunch Sports

"

Fish has had a great summer in the US winning in Atlanta and being runner up in LA. He lost to Novak Djokovic last week in the final of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Montréal, Canada.

Fish won his first match over Nadal in Cincy, and we want to see them meet again in New York. We want to see if Nadal has improved enough to beat Fish, and we want to see if Fish, having one of the best stretches of his career, can continue to win.

This would be an excellent match.

Roger Federer vs. Tomas Berdych

2 of 10

Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych met in Cincinnati, with Berdych coming out on top.

The world's No. 3 tennis player, Federer was supposed to beat the No. 9 player in Berdych with ease. However, Berdych bested former world No. 1 Roger Federer 6-2 7-6 (3) in one hour and 32 minutes.

Berdych won 75 percent of his points when serving, saying:

"

“I was really working on my serve after Wimbledon. When I had a few weeks off, I was really practising hard, and especially this was the one thing that I was really like trying to work on more than the other things."  10sBalls

"

The reason we want to see these two meet up again in New York is to see if Berdych's serve is still too good for Federer, and to see how Federer changes his approach.

Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer

3 of 10

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal used to be the two best players in the world. They seemed to always meet in the final of Grand Slams, and they always provided us with great tennis matches.

These two are not nasty to each other, yet they seem to still have a bit of a rivalry among fans because they played each other so often on the biggest stages.

Federer has fallen from No. 1 to No. 3, while Nadal is still No. 2. These two are evenly matched, and it would be nice to add another installment to their "rivalry" in New York, with Federer trying to win in New York after Nadal beat him in the French Open.

Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer

4 of 10

Novak Djokovic is 57-2 this season, and his only loss that was not because he was forced to retire due to an injury came against Roger Federer, with Federer winning 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/5).

Federer stopped Djokovic from reaching 42 straight wins to start a season, which would have tied him with John McEnroe.

Federer is the only one who has beaten Djokovic at full-health (or close to) this season, and we want to see them meet in the US Open to see if he can do it again, or if Djokovic has adjusted his game accordingly.

Mardy Fish vs. Andy Roddick

5 of 10

Mardy Fish is ranked No. 7 in the world, while Andy Roddick is ranked No. 15. So why do we want to see these two play in the US Open?

These two are the two best American players in the field. Since they would be playing at the US Open, it's only fitting to have them play for the admiration of the US fans.

Serena Williams vs. Venus Wiliams

6 of 10

This is another "sentimental matchup" that we want to see at the US Open. The reason for wanting to see Venus and Serena Williams play is obvious: because they are sisters.

These two have also provided us with great matches in the past, and while they are struggling, they would still provide us with a good match.

The two sisters are ranked No. 31 and No. 36 in the world, with only 250 points separating them. They are still somewhat evenly matched and would play each other close. These two are also fan favorites in the US.

Novak Djokovic vs. Mardy Fish

7 of 10

Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish are both playing the best tennis of their careers, and we want to see them play at the US Open.

Djokovic has claimed the No. 1 spot in the world, while Fish is only No. 7. These two have met earlier this summer, with Djokovic beating Fish.

With Djokovic being on a historic run, and Fish having the best summer of his career, we really want to see if Fish can top Djokovic in a David-and-Goliath matchup. Even though the two only have six players between them, they are not on the same level.

Fish recently topped No. 2 Nadal and gave No. 4 Murray a good game, but can he beat No. 1 Djokovic, who might have shoulder issues? Hopefully we shall see soon.

Novak Djokovic vs. Andy Murray

8 of 10

Yesterday, in the final at Cincinnati, Novak Djokovic withdrew because of a sore shoulder that bothered him in the finals against Andy Murray.

Djokovic is in the middle of a historic season, going 57-2 including this loss, and we hope he gets better soon.

We want to see Djokovic back at full health for the US Open, and playing Andy Murray once more to see who would have won the match if he was not injured. This game obviously would not decide both matches, but it would be nice to see the world's No. 1 player take on the No. 4 player once more.

Caroline Wozniacki vs. Vera Zvonareva

9 of 10

Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva should meet in the finals of the US Open because they are the No. 1 and No. 2 women's tennis players respectively in the world right now.

The 20-year-old sensation Wozniacki has climbed the ladder to take the No. 1 spot, while the 27-year-old Zvonareva is looking to make up ground against her.

These two are the best in the world, and we obviously want to see them play.

Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal

10 of 10

This is probably the best match that we could hope for. If Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic meet, it will probably be in the finals, and that would be a great match to watch. Not only are these two the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world, but they also have plenty of storylines.

These two met in the finals of the 2010 US Open, and Nadal won in four sets, 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-2.

The last time these two played was in the finals at Wimbledon, and that match is most memorable not because of the play of these two (which was excellent), but because Djokovic ate the grass.

Nadal is one of only a few people who could stop Djokovic, who is 57-2 with nine titles this season, and is on pace to top John McEnroe's historic 1984 season.

This game would have some many important storylines that it would be the best we could have, and it would not be too difficult for it to happen.
