NHL Video: 5 Great Verbal Smackdowns

Isaac SmithJun 7, 2018

"Talk smack." "Come at me bro." "Where you at?"

Comebacks in sports, or verbal "smackdowns," are more than just attempts by older athletes to play the sport again.

Verbal smackdowns in sports seem to be more frequent now between players and coaches than they have ever been.

With the rising Internet media presence in sports, players and fans alike now know when another athlete or coach has an issue with them.

Most of these feuds end up being brought out into the open and exploited by the media.

Provocative questions about said feuds often lead to humorous situations and verbal smackdowns that players seem to dish out at will.

Most of the popular smackdowns and trash talking feuds are brought about in the NBA and NFL, but the NHL has its own select group of players and coaches who just can't seem to keep their mouths closed.

I present to you some of the top verbal smackdowns in NHL history.

1. Roenick vs. Roy

1 of 7

Patrick Roy and Jeremy Roenick.

Roy, arguably the second best goalie of all time, and Roenick, a legend in his day and a future Hall of Famer.

In this little jest between the two, Roenick is responding to being hauled down on a breakaway.

Roenick asks, "I wanted to know where he [Roy] was in Game 3?" Roenick goes on to add that Roy was "probably getting his jock out of the stands."

Roy, upon being asked about Roenick's comment, quickly responded: "I cannot hear what Jeremy says because I got my two Stanley Cup rings plugged in my ears."

Roenick ultimately never won a Stanley Cup, while Roy went on to win two more after that statement about Cup rings in his ears.

2. Toews vs. Kane

2 of 7

Ever wonder what it's like being Toews and Kane for a day?

Take a listen to the following video from EA Sports. The casual humor is priceless.

3. Pronger vs. Adam Burish

3 of 7

Chris Pronger may have a bad rep on the ice as a dirty player, but off the ice he is a character.

Adam Burish had an interview right after winning the Stanley Cup, calling Pronger "the biggest idiot in the league."

In a different interview, Pronger asks "if he played" and when he is told that Burish will hit him the next time he sees him, Pronger asks if it will be "in the minors."

Classic Pronger humor.

4. Roenick vs. Millbury

4 of 7

Millbury and Roenick are two of the most notable people when it comes to speaking before they think.

But...note to self: don't try to compare Ovechkin and Crosby; it's like comparing apples and oranges.

See the video for more.

5. Don Cherry vs....Women?

5 of 7

Don Cherry's quotes are generally hilarious, but his sexism comes to the forefront here, making this clip even more interesting.

He is well known for his work on Coach's Corner.

Cherry's quote: "Keep your eyes on the puck...it's always a woman, yapping away."

Don Cherry everyone.

Honorable Mention: Sean Avery vs. French Players Who Wear Visors

6 of 7

Sean Avery might be the biggest character in the NHL right now.

It seems that Avery just can't stay out of trouble, or out of the League's dog house.

But this smack down on French players who wear visors is perfect for this list.

Which Leagues Smack Talk the Most?

7 of 7

Fans of multiple major sporting leagues may dispute which league smack talks the most.

There are characters in every league that will say more than they should about a given subject, whether it's the NFL's Terrell Owens or Chad Ochocinco (formerly Chad Johnson), or the NBA's LeBron James, Kobe Bryant or Shaquille O'Neal.

But the NHL's characters—Jeremy Roenick, Sean Avery, Don Cherry, Patrick Roy, Chris Pronger and others—make up a legitimate cast of characters that can smack talk with the best of them.

Expect more classic smack talking to heat up as this NHL season starts up in October.

For you NHL fans, who did I leave out that smack talks the most?
