Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Would Wesley Sneijder Fit in with the Gunners?

Rohan SubraJun 7, 2018

Arsene Wenger recently gave an interview saying that he would spend money if he found a worthy player, as ESPN Soccernet reported:

"

"I will pay £30 million I will even pay £40 million if I find the right players. But it's not a question of money, it's a question of quality we find. I think I have a wrong reputation of not wanting to spend money - I do not want to spend money for average players. We are not frightened to spend money when we think it's right."

"

Well, the question is the following: how much is he willing to pay?

Due to the recent departure of Cesc Fabregas, and the probable departure of Samir Nasri, Wenger should be looking at creative midfielders like Wesley Sneijder.

If Wenger was really being truthful when he made that statement, he shouldn't be afraid to dig an extra £10 million out of his pocket for the Internazionale man.

The fact is that Arsenal needs another superstar, and Wesley Sneijder is nothing short of that. Plus, he would make a formidable midfield-striker pair with forward Robin van Persie, who needs to do well this year if the Gunners are to finish the season properly.

Sneijder is used to being paired up with a great striker; as he is currently with Samuel Eto'o. It won't be too difficult for him to adjust to Arsenal.

Not only that, but at the Emirates, goal-scorers are needed. True, van Persie can score, but almost everyone else on the team won't shoot until they are in close proximity with the goal; there is a sense of panic in the opposing team's half, where everyone is trying to give up the ball.

They need someone who can score from distance.

One thing about van Persie is that he has proven that he can consistently miss free kicks by three inches. It's frustrating for Arsenal fans to see three out of 10 free kicks hit the crossbar, and seven of them fly an inch over the goal.

Sneijder, however, is a great shooter, and would add much long-range ability to the Gunners. Now that Fabregas is gone, he can take the free kicks intended for right-footers.

One thing that is always taken into consideration when someone is bought is age: If the player is relatively old, you wouldn't spend so much on him because retirement would probably be soon.

With Arsenal, though, it's very different.

Arsene Wenger builds the squad around youngsters, buying them at a tender age, and waiting for a few years until they will bloom. For example, three out of four of Wenger's purchases this summer haven't even obtained the age of 20.

Some players like van Persie, Vermaelen, Sagna and Song are close to their peak, but others are going to reach it in a few years. These are people like Szczesny, Wilshere, Ramsey, Walcott, Jenkinson, Gibbs and others.

For this reason, Arsenal could really do with a short-term improvement in Wesley Sneijder, who at 27, might be a little past his prime already. (It doesn't mean he's still not amazing.)

Another question is whether Arsene Wenger is willing to spend tens of millions of pounds, as well as buy a superstar who will make an immediate impact of the club.

There is yet another money issue to this transfer: Sneijder's wage requirement is £250,000 a week. Of course, this is absurd for an Arsenal player, given that the Gunners don't normally buy players with such high demands.

But if Wenger is really looking for assurance in the short run, why not throw an extra few thousand pounds per week? If "le Professeur" is serious about spending £40 million for a player, it shows he's pretty much going for broke, and giving the Dutchman a high salary won't really hurt.

It's great to say that Arsenal wants to buy Sneijder, but what's in it for the man himself?

First of all, if Sneijder's financial needs are met, then it is fine on some level. However, everyone knows that players want trophies, and it's not exactly a secret that Arsenal can't win any.

Yes, Sneijder's ideal transfer was to a club like Manchester United, who win titles left, right, and center. The obvious point is that if Wesley Sneijder makes such a dramatic difference to the Gunners, they will be major contenders for silverware already.

Plus, his form at Internazionale isn't as great as he would want it to be, so a switch of teams would be a fresh start for Sneijder. (Several times in the past, a great player who isn't playing his best of late has transferred to a new team, and that move has helped them pick up their form.)

If Arsenal are keen on Sneijder, then it is a good sign for them that Manchester United have said that they aren't interested in new signings. Reports from The Sun quoted Sir Alex Ferguson:

"

"You can forget anyone you like, I'm happy with the youngsters I've got here. When you take the roll call of players, I'm certainly not looking to add to that."

"

Arsenal also got financial stability, as their extra money from the Cesc Fabregas transfer will help them add a new player. Since the two are valued at around the same price, the Fabregas money could be used to buy Sneijder.

Manchester City also looked to target Sneijder, and you would think that they wouldn't need another player to propel them forward, but it's not possible to tell with them since they just keep buying more and more players.

There were also talks of him joining Malaga, who after their takeover, have become spending machines. However, those talks have stopped in recent days, as it is said a superstar like Sneijder would not want to move to a small club like Malaga.

I'm sure Sneijder would like to go to a big team like Arsenal to make a huge difference to the struggling Gunners.

He would be the center of attention in the football world, because if a player like him, or a team like Arsenal make a transfer, it's a huge deal. And if his needs are met in terms of money, then he shouldn't have many complaints.

So, this mostly depends on Arsene Wenger's fear to dig a little cash out of his pocket.

If he can get over his fear of spending, Arsenal will benefit—and maybe win a trophy—because of the contributions of one of the best midfielders in the world today.
