WWE: 10 Potential Tag Teams That Could Breathe New Life into a Dying Division

Will J BakerJun 1, 2018

There was a time when the tag team division was the pride of the WWF, a time when Hulk Hogan refused to main event house shows because he could not follow the Rockers and a time where the Road Warriors were two of the most beloved stars in the company.

Nowadays, the lack of creativity and direction to the tag team division is showing a lack of respect to the great tag team champions of the past.

However, there have been rumors of a potential shake-up in the division of late with the WWE said to be scouting for tag teams from the independent scene.

There have been also been indications that the WWE plan to create a number of teams from the current roster to spice up the division.

This would definitely be a step in the right direction and would serve to improve the quality of WWE programming further.

The Usos

1 of 10

The Usos have recently shown on Smackdown that they have sufficient passion and intensity in the ring to get over as faces.

They have been involved in some great tag team matches of late, and it is time they were given a run with the belts.

They come from a family of legendary wrestling pedigree and they were brought up in the business.

Although some would say that their in-ring prowess is cancelled out by their apparent lack of mic skills, this could be easily solved by combining them with a manager.

WWE Creative recently attempted to fit Tyson Kidd with a manager on Superstars but nothing came of it.

However, there are candidates for managers currently under contract including Matt Striker, Armando Estrada and Michael Hayes.

These managers could help teams like the Usos get over on the mic until they are firmly established as a fixture in the tag team division.

Until then, the WWE needs to give the Usos more TV time and longer matches so that they can show everyone what they are capable of doing.

Epico and Hunico

2 of 10

Hunico has recently made an appearance on WWE programming as the stand-in for the suspended Sin Cara.

He is a masked luchador that wrestled for AAA and Chikara before signing a contract with WWE's developmental territory, FCW.

In FCW, he has formed a tag team with Tito Colon, cousin of Carlito and Primo, who now performs under a mask as Epico.

"Los Aviadores," as Epico and Hunico are known, have won the tag team championships on multiple occasions down in Florida and there has been a call for some time to elevate them to the main roster.

It would be a hark back to the great luchador tag teams of yesteryear and would also be a way of adding two more great workers capable of putting on high class matches to the tag team division.

Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler

3 of 10

There have been several recent indications that the WWE plan to create a mid card heel stable on Raw managed by Vickie Guerrero.

Vickie's influence has taken Dolph Ziggler to the main event scene on Smackdown and association with the "Cougar" could help re-establish Jack Swagger as a prominent heel.

Swagger and Ziggler have both gone from World Heavyweight title matches on Smackdown to mid-card obscurity on Raw.

The WWE seem to want to put the US title on Alex Riley, which would mean that Ziggler's singles run has nowhere to go but downhill.

A partnership between the two would spice up the tag division with a pair of talented heels and ensure that they do not follow in the footsteps of Drew McIntyre.

With Guerrero as their manager, this potential team of former World Champions could have a long run with the belts.

Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston

4 of 10

In the same way that Ziggler and Swagger are no longer considered for meaningful feuds as heels, Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston are only used to put over main event talent like the Miz or Alberto Del Rio.

They have already worked one match together on Raw and it would make sense to pair them together permanently.

Bourne and Kofi suffer from the same problem as many on the current roster in that they lack the charisma to be taken seriously in the main event.

But they are both exciting to watch and are hugely popular with the younger contingent of fans which means that they are unlikely to be let go any time soon.

As a tag team, they could really shine through and produce some great matches that actually mean something.

Mark Henry and Ezekiel Jackson

5 of 10

The potential of pairing these two behemoths has been much discussed among the Internet Wrestling Community and it makes sense from a booking perspective.

Mark Henry's singles push as a monster heel seems to be geared towards putting Sheamus over as a top babyface and I assume the two will have a "Summerslam" rematch in the coming weeks.

Jackson's run as Intercontinental Champion was short-lived and forgettable, and his skills as a babyface leave a lot to be desired.

Zeke has always been better when deployed as a silent bodyguard figure, whether working with Brian Kendrick or William Regal.

It is imperative that he turns heel again; otherwise he will struggle to stay afloat and a partnership with a red-hot Henry could be exactly what he needs.

These two would bring new meaning to the word "domination" and could be involved in some interesting feuds.

The Major Broskis

6 of 10

The WWE have finally decided to listen to the fans by putting Zack Ryder on TV as the Assistant to the General Manager on Smackdown.

The next step is to re-establish the fact that Ryder can actually go in the ring and actually has the potential to be more than a joke character.

What better way to make sure that Ryder starts to be taken more seriously without completely undermining his character than by giving him back his old partner in crime?

Curt Hawkins is another under-utilized member of the Smackdown roster who has something to add to the product.

Ryder and Hawkins have wrestled together on the independent scene, ECW and even on Smackdown as the "Edgeheads" and the "Major Brothers".

A return for the "Major Broskis" in 2011 would be entertaining, would sell merchandise and would help the careers of both men in the long run.

Mason Ryan and Skip Sheffield

7 of 10

These two powerhouses are both rumoured to be two of Vince McMahon's favourites and are both on their way back from injury.

There have been many rumours of late that Sheffield would return as a member of the New Nexus but the disintegration of that stable makes that an impossibility.

There has to come a time where Ryan and Sheffield can survive without a CM Punk or a Wade Barrett as their mouthpiece.

A tag team pairing would allow the Welshman more of a chance to work without exposing his limited in-ring abilities.

It would also give Skip a chance to get back into the groove and to develop more before being thrust into the high-pressure role of a singles star.

Seth Rollins (Tyler Black) and Richie Steamboat

8 of 10

This is another tag team that has established itself in FCW with several runs with the tag titles.

Seth Rollins made a name for himself on the independent scene wrestling as Tyler Black in ROH and has a large underground fan base.

Richie Steamboat is the son of legendary Hall of Famer Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and has consistently been linked with a spot on NXT.

Rollins' name has come up as a possible candidate for the potential "ROH Invasion" group that would be led by CM Punk.

But if this does not come to fruition, then it would make sense to bring Rollins and Steamboat to the main roster as a package deal.

They both need a lot of work before they would ready to establish themselves as singles stars on either Raw or Smackdown.

A tag team run on WWE TV would give them a chance let everyone know who they are and as they are both relatively young, there would be no need to split them up for years to come.

The Young Bucks (Generation Me)

9 of 10

Max and Jeremy Buck recently made wrestling headlines when they quit TNA due to a lack of television time and storyline ideas.

They competed as "Generation Me" and impressed with a series of high-quality matches against the Motor City Machine Guns.

They were also used as X-Division athletes and competed against each other in a break-up angle that was scrapped by TNA Creative.

They are two extremely talented young wrestlers that have been compared to the Hardy Boyz on more than one occasion.

They have also reportedly been seen backstage at WWE where they apparently showed a lack of respect to Booker T.

This is according to Booker's Twitter account where he criticised the "Young Bucks" for their demeanour and attitude, citing respect as a forgotten aspect of the wrestling business.

But should the WWE choose to overlook this, then the Bucks will definitely make an impact in the tag team division.

The Kings of Wrestling

10 of 10

Ever since CM Punk shook up the WWE landscape with a worked shoot promo that mentioned "Ring of Honor" and Colt Cabana, there has been speculation that a ROH invasion will take place.

This is based on the fact that Cabana worked a Smackdown dark match with Wade Barrett, and the WWE's reported interest in the "Kings of Wrestling."

Claudio Castagnoli and Chris Hero are both known for their friendships with Punk as well as their legendary status on the independent scene.

They have won the tag team titles in three separate companies and they could bring credibility to Punk's stable by winning the belts in WWE.

Hero and Castagnoli are both extremely talented competitors and it would really be a sign of the WWE's ambition to revamp the tag team landscape if they were to sign one of the best tag teams in the business currently.
