NHL Free Agency: 5 Former Chicago Blackhawks Who Have Yet to Find Work

Jon FromiJun 2, 2018

The Chicago Blackhawks made a lot of changes in their roster over the course of the summer. Lost among the signings and trades are players that, for whatever reason, weren't targeted for new contracts.

It was known fairy early following Chicago's playoff exit that some changes would be made. Because of this, it's not surprising to see the 'Hawks part ways with some players.

As training camp approaches, the Blackhawks have five UFAs who have not hooked up with another club, NHL or otherwise. Some may sign in the coming weeks. Others may be contemplating retirement.

Here's a status report on the five 'Hawks from last season who are still on the market.

1. Chris Campoli

1 of 5

Campoli, of course, was made a UFA by the 'Hawks when they walked away from the $2.5 million arbitration award. The team moved Campoli's arbitration hearing up to July 20 when they decided to go another direction.

After affording Campoli additional time to find work, his agent Rich Evans was confident that his client was going to be a hot item.

It's been a month, and Campoli is still unsigned. Apparently, Evans is taking his time sorting through the offers.

Or there just may not be the interest in Campoli that he and his agent figured on.

He is recovering from offseason knee surgery, but it would appear that the 27-year-old defenseman has something to offer to the right team. Is the Campoli camp still looking for more than teams are willing to pay?

2. Jordan Hendry

2 of 5

Hendry is coming off of ACL surgery on his left knee and likely isn't generating the interest Campoli is claiming to be receiving.

Hendry is versatile, having played wing and defense in his Rockford tenure, but there isn't really a part of his game that stands out. The injury, suffered back at the end of February when Hendry was finally getting some time on the ice, couldn't have come at a worse time in his career.

Hendry is probably looking at an AHL deal or going oversees to prove his knee is structurally sound. There's no word on the recovery process, so Hendry could be waiting a while for a team to call.

3. Ryan Johnson

3 of 5

Johnson, 35, may be in the same boat he was in a season ago, save for the fact he isn't recovering from foot problems.

Johnson signed with the 'Hawks in December and after finding his niche proved to be a nice pickup at the dot, winning over 60 percent of his faceoffs.

To the surprise of some, including Johnson, Chicago showed zero interest in bringing him back.

Late last season, Johnson was interviewed between periods by the Blackhawks' broadcast crew. I thought he handled himself pretty well on camera. It may be time to start looking for work in that area.

4. Fernando Pisani

4 of 5

Pisani was banged up several times last season but still logged 60 games for the 'Hawks, more than in each of his previous two seasons with Edmonton.

His production dropped off as the season went on and was of little use in the playoffs. It's not a surprise that he wasn't re-signed.

Pisani had a solid eight-year run in the NHL, but it may be time to hang up the skates.

5. Marty Turco

5 of 5

If last season was Turco's swan song, I'm sure it's not how he envisioned it going.

Turco lost the starting job in November and appeared in relief in just two of the season's final 27 games. He handled it with all the class in the world, but so far it hasn't translated to any offers.

Puck Daddy reported this week that Turco's agent expects him to be playing in the NHL this season. No word on interested teams followed that statement.

Turco could get an invite to a training camp, but it looks as if he's destined for a full-time broadcasting gig that may start sooner rather than later.
