Chelsea Tranfer News: Are the Blues Looking to Grab Juan Mata from Valencia?

The Daily Mail has reported that Chelsea have had a £22 million bid for Valencia winger Juan Mata rejected.

The club are reported to have offered £18 million up front, with £4 million to follow. However, it seems as though the Spanish side are not prepared to sell their star forward.

The likelihood is that the Blues will come back with a higher bid, bearing in mind Andre Villas-Boas' first press conference and his promise to add flair to the Chelsea squad. Juan Mata would without doubt provide that if he were to join the West London outfit.

In addition, the World Cup winner could improve the club's daunting attack force. The most important thing about the possible acquisition of Mata is that Chelsea would at last have a true winger, rather than striker-turned-wingers such as Salomon Kalou, Nicolas Anelka and Daniel Sturridge.

These three players prefer cutting in towards the box, trying to dribble past defenders and blasting a shot towards goal. In contrast, Mata is able to assist his teammates by delivering a killer final ball and by his crossing ability.

Furthermore, he could help compatriot Fernando Torres get out of his scoring slump and provide assists for other natural-born goal scorers on the team such as Didier Drogba and Chelsea newcomer Romelu Lukaku.

However, don't let Mata's 43 assists in 174 games for Los Che fool you—he is himself a threat to score goals. Even greater than his assist tally is his goal scoring ability.

The U-21 UEFA European Championship winner has amassed 46 goals in 174 appearances for his current side. With so much skill to contribute to a team, it would make sense to see Chelsea further their chase in Juan Mata.
