Baseball: Pecos League Continues to Push the Envelope

Devon TeepleJun 4, 2018

Despite some struggles with attendance earlier in the year, the Pecos League has almost made it through their first official season and are days away from crowning its first champion.

Andrew Dunn, commissioner of the Pecos League, has always been very open with me during my write-ups. “We are committed to play in our cities for 2012 season and we have no financial losses,”  he said.

With that being said, 2012 is looking like it will be a go, and expansion continues to be the main topic. The following cities have been targeted—Del Rio, Texas; Odessa, Texas; Clovis, New Mexico; and Pueblo, Colorado; are the front-runners—while others in this recruitment process (Trinidad, Colorado), couldn’t have things going any better.

Trinidad City Manager Ed Gil de Rubio says “The city is partnering with the Trinidad and Las Animas County Chamber of Commerce to seek approval to be home to an expansion team in the Pecos League of Professional Baseball Club.”

For a league that is one year in and has gone through quite a bit to get to this point, and with a city that is looking for any way to be a part of it, it is more than any commissioner could ask for.

Dunn is obviously excited that all parties are on the same page, as this will not only be good for the fans but also be good for the city in terms of revenue.

“I spoke to Mr. Dunn today. It’s a very exciting time for us,” Gil de Rubio said. “It’s a very reputable league, and would definitely be a revenue generator for the city. It comes with a list of references from other city managers throughout the Southwest.”

What gives the Pecos League an advantage is that they don’t play in cities where other professional/Independent teams exist. Whether it's luck or an ingenious strategy, the Pecos League has the ability to corner the market and really make a name for themselves. Now, with 37 players who have advanced to higher independent or affiliated baseball, it’s hard for people not to take notice.
