WWE's Night of Champions: Analyzing and Predicting Each Possible Match
"Night of Champions! Where every title is defended!" Jim Ross yells as the show is underway. "We have a huge main event! Alberto Del Rio will defend his WWE Championship against John Cena and CM Punk!"
Buffalo, New York, is the location for Night of Champions. Ironically, Buffalo might be called the "City of Runner-ups" due to the Bills reaching four consecutive Super Bowls without winning one. I apologize to the fine citizens of Buffalo for reminding them of the Bills inability to win a Super Bowl.
I see Christian taking some time off. I expect him to return as a face, especially after Edge completely chewed him out at Summerslam. Without any more blabbering dialogue, here is what I want to see out of Night of Champions.
John Morrison and Rey Mysterio vs. Miz and R-Truth
1 of 9The little Chihuahua and the Miz have unfinished business. R-Truth and John Morrison have had a brutal feud. Miz and Morrison are bitter rivals. Rey Mysterio and R-Truth had a feud earlier this year. This tag team match makes perfect sense to open the show. It gets these four guys who need to be on the card on it.
R-Truth is the victim of an international conspiracy when Rey Mysterio connects with the 619, then John Morrison does his running knee smash to finish off the entertaining lunatic.
Winner: John Morrison and Rey Mysterio
Estimated Match Time: 12 minutes
Cody Rhodes (C) vs. Justin Gabriel for the Intercontinental Championship
2 of 9I see Ezekiel Jackson invoking his rematch clause on Smackdown instead of a pay-per-view. Justin Gabriel has been in limbo as of late. He can be a really good face on the Blue Brand with his great high-flying skills and his 450 splash.
Cody Rhodes and Justin Gabriel might be a dark horse for match of the night. Both are proficient in the ring and are very athletic. I also see Ted Dibiase with Cody Rhodes in this match. Gabriel tries to hit the 450 splash but he misses. Rhodes hits the Cross Rhodes to retain his Intercontinental gold.
Winner (and still champion): Cody Rhodes
Estimated Match Time: 15 minutes
Dolph Ziggler (C) vs. Alex Riley for the United States Championship
3 of 9I am highly intrigued by this match. I expected this match to occur at Summerslam, but Dolph Ziggler's injury prevented that from taking place. Downstait fans should enjoy this match as the band plays both Ziggler's and Riley's entrances.
Dolph Ziggler is slowly turning face as he has not been on the same page with Vickie Guerrero lately. Apparently Jack Swagger is about to be Vickie Guerrero latest managerial client. A Swagger-Ziggler-Riley feud might be in the future.
Fast forward to the match—Vickie tries to regain Ziggler's favor by interfering on Dolph's behalf. However, Vickie fails to help Ziggler win. Instead, Riley hits an Impaler DDT to become the new United States champion in a great match.
Winner (and new champion): Alex Riley
Estimated Match Time: 12 minutes
David Otunga and Michael McGilicutty (C) vs. Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne
4 of 9This tag team title match might be better defined by the great nicknames for the teams. We have McTunga vs. Air Kofi for the tag titles. In other words, we have McDonalds' newest desert taking on an African airline. If you like random tag teams with great nicknames, then this is your kind of match.
I actually like the progress Otunga and McGillicutty have made as a team. Otunga and McGillicutty play to their strengths. Otunga is good on the mic and McGillicutty is good in the ring.
Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne actually make a great tag team. Air Kofi can be a high-flying tag team that fans can easily get behind.
McTunga has had those 10-cent belts for a while now. At the end of the match, McTunga encounters some trouble in paradise and an airbourne illness. Lots of lawsuits coming for McDonalds.
Winner (and new champions): Air Kofi
Estimated Match Time: 10 minutes
Kelly Kelly (C) vs. Beth Phoenix for the Divas Championship
5 of 9Let's be perfectly clear here. Kelly Kelly needed to retain her championship at Summerslam to solidify her status as face of the Divas division. Losing to Beth Phoenix this soon would have put a damper in WWE's plans to build the division around her.
Now is the time to put the belt on the Glamazon. Night of Champions happens to be in Phoenix's hometown of Buffalo. Expect Phoenix to get a positive crowd reaction. A Glam Slam finishes off Kelly Kelly after a good match.
Winner (and new champion): Beth Phoenix
Estimated Match Time: 7 minutes
Daniel Bryan (C) vs. Wade Barrett for the Money in the Bank Briefcase
6 of 9Daniel Bryan is a man of honor. He lost to Wade Barrett at Summerslam. Therefore, in Bryan's eyes, Barrett has earned the right to face him for the Money in the Bank briefcase. This feud has the potential to be great because of Bryan's in-ring skills along with Barrett's mic skills.
I expect this match to surpass their encounter at Summerslam. Wade Barrett tries to hit Wasteland, but Bryan manages to lock in the guillotine. Eventually Barrett has to tap out.
Winner (and still briefcase holder): Daniel Bryan
Estimated Match Time: 15 minutes
WARNING: This next slide is a spoiler from Smackdown.
Spoiler: Randy Orton (C) vs. Mark Henry for the World Heavyweight Championship
7 of 9I have always wondered if Mark Henry deserves a world championship. Mark Henry has been on fire as of late, destroying the likes of Big Show, Kane and Vladimir Kozlov. The World's Strongest Man at least deserves a title shot for his efforts.
Violence is the name of the game for this match. Orton's psychotic gimmick and Henry's monster heel persona will ensure a fair amount of violence.
The World's Strongest Man connects on a World's Strongest Slam to a two count. Randy Orton connects on a RKO. "1! 2! NO!" The Buffalo crowd yells. Eventually, Henry connects on the World's 2nd Strongest Slam. An actual heavyweight is the World Heavyweight Champion.
Winner (and new champion): Mark Henry
Estimated Match Time: 15 minutes
Alberto Del Rio (C) vs. CM Punk vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship
8 of 9In Alberto Del Rio's second title defense, he must go up against John Cena and CM Punk. Both Cena and Punk are entitled to a rematch. Triple H decides upon a triple threat match for the main event at Night of Champions.
The Mexican Aristocrat, CM Punk and the Giant Tomato can put on a great triple threat match. I expect lots of false finishes and interference. CM Punk is about to hit the GTS on Del Rio. However, Kevin Nash once again interferes and hits Punk with a chair. Del Rio then responds with a kick to John Cena's face to retain his WWE Championship.
But you already know that.
Winner (and still champion): Alberto Del Rio
Estimated Match Time: 35 minutes
Aftermath
9 of 9Raw
CM Punk and Triple H continue their feud. Kevin Nash and CM Punk have a match at Hell in a Cell. John Cena and Alberto Del Rio battle for the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell.
Miz and R-Truth form some sort of an alliance as a tag team. They become an interesting threat for Air Kofi's tag team titles at Hell in a Cell. Rey Mysterio takes some well-deserved time off.
Smackdown
Mark Henry's long tenure with the company has earned him a run with the World Heavyweight Championship. Randy Orton invokes his rematch clause at Hell in a Cell against Mark Henry. This opens up the possibility for Big Show or Kane to cost Henry the title.
