NFL Preseason: Terrell Owens and the 10 Best Free Agents Left on the Market

jim beamJun 7, 2018

At this point of the offseason, most of the good free agents have already signed with new teams. The free agents who are still available are either past their prime, frequently injured or just not very good.

But there are still some players from the remaining free agent pool that could have a substantial impact wherever they sign. Here are the 10 best free agents left on the market.

Terrell Owens

1 of 10

Wide receiver Terrell Owens' best days are certainly behind him but he can still play at a high level, even at 37-years-old.

In 2010, Owens led the Cincinnati Bengals with 72 receptions, 983 yards and nine touchdowns.

Any team that is willing to deal with his antics should consider signing Owens to a short deal.

T. J. Houshmandzadeh

2 of 10

Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is in the twilight of his career, but the big receiver can still provide an excellent target for quarterbacks.

Although his production has declined since leaving the Cincinnati Bengals, the 33-year-old receiver can be signed at a short term, bargain rate and still be a threat to put up good numbers.

Houshmandzadeh can thrive in a secondary role as he did in Cincinnati. A contending team that already has a number one receiver would suit him best.

Nick Kaczur

3 of 10

Former New England Patriots right tackle Nick Kaczur has landed on the free agency market after injuries and a monster contract forced the Pats to cut ties with him.

Kaczur missed all of 2010 because of a back injury and many doubt whether he can remain healthy. If he can, Kaczur would be a huge boost to the right side of any team's offensive line. And he could be a major steal as long as his next deal does not look anything like his last with the Pats.

Brian Waters

4 of 10

Like many remaining free agents, offensive lineman Brian Waters is near the end of his career. And that's why most teams have backed away from signing the 34-year-old guard.

Although Waters' Pro Bowl selection in 2010 was due mostly to respect rather than actual play, Waters is still better than most right guards currently in the league.

Any team that needs help with its interior line, especially on the right side, should sign Waters to a short contract.

Kirk Morrison

5 of 10

Surprisingly, linebacker Kirk Morrison is still available despite recording 89 tackles with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010.

Morrison could start for plenty of teams at middle linebacker, even though he is more suited to play on the outside. And though his production has been declining, he is only 29 and his could have a revival playing in a good defense.

Dhani Jones

6 of 10

Linebacker Dhani Jones is doing just fine without football this offseason, but there are some teams who should give the 11-year veteran a look.

Last season, Jones was a productive defender for the Bengals, recording 125 tackles and one sack at 32 years of age.

Whether or not he has much interest in playing anymore, Jones is still a quality linebacker.

Pat Williams

7 of 10

Defensive tackle Pat Williams is 38 years old, but he is still a mammoth of a defender.

No matter how much his play declines, Williams' size will always draw attention from offensive linemen and create opportunities for the rest of the front seven.

He works well as a 4-3 tackle and would help fill the needs for a team that is looking to improve its run defense.

Keith Bulluck

8 of 10

Linebacker Keith Bulluck wants to play a bigger role than the one he had with the New York Giants in 2010. Whoever gives him that role will likely have an 80-100 tackles per year player in its lineup.

Bulluck was signed late to the Giants in 2010 after the former Pro Bowler was recovering from a knee injury. He played a limited role in New York, posting his worst season since his rookie year.

But Bulluck remains a sure tackler who can play good in coverage, and he will probably have a renaissance year if he's given a strong role with another team.

Antwaan Randle El

9 of 10

Wide receiver Antwaan Randle El remains available, and is still a quality player who can make plays in more ways than just catching passes.

Randle El can help fill a team's needs in the return game, trick plays and work as a third or fourth receiving option.

He is not worthy of a large, long-term contract. However, he would make an excellent addition to a team that can get him for cheap and give him an appropriate role.

Darren Sharper

10 of 10

Injuries and age have taken their toll on 35-year-old safety Darren Sharper. But he can still be a force in the defensive backfield when he is healthy.

An All-Pro in 2010 despite missing 8 games, Sharper would bring considerable help to whatever team signs him.

He can remain effective in a limited role and serve as a mentor to any team with a young, up-and-coming safety.
