UFC Live on Versus 5 Results: Ranking the 5 Best Fights of the Night

Andrew MahlmannJun 5, 2018

UFC Live: Hardy vs Lytle delivered the goods.  Out of 12 total bouts, only five went to a decision.

Heading into the main event, I was sure some of the earlier scraps would earn "Fight of the Night", but low and behold, it was the main event that officially earned the UFC's "Fight of the Night".

Chris Lytle vs Dan Hardy was an excellent battle, but was it the best fight of the night?

Which fights got overlooked by the glitz and glamour of the main event?

These are the five best fights from UFC Live on Versus 5: Lytle vs Hardy.

Honorable Mention

1 of 6

Practically every other fight that didn't make my top 5 was still an honorable mention.

Benavidez over Wineland- for a punishing clash of stand-up styles

Ludwig over Sadollah- a solid battle of two of the welterweight division's best kickboxers

Markes over Vemola- a breakout performance in a battle of two powerful light heavyweights

Miller over O'Brien- another finish from the talented "Magrinho"

Herman over Noke- "short fuse" officially reinstates himself as a middleweight force

5. Jim Miller vs Benson Henderson

2 of 6

Two of the most elite lightweights went to war with Henderson's superior strength and overall physicality proving to be the deciding factor.

Scores were all over the place as one judge gave a landslide victory to Henderson 30-26, while another judge saw a much closer battle at 29-28 in Henderson's favor.

Henderson's intensity was something to behold, and any fighter not as devastatingly durable or polished as Miller certainly would have wilted under the pressure.

Miller showed some slick submission attempts and good punches standing, but Henderson was relentless in ground and pounding his esteemed opponent.

4. Donald Cerrone vs Charles Oliveira

3 of 6

I do not mean to brag, but I predicted that Donald Cerrone would pick up his first KO/TKO victory against Charles Oliveira.

Cerrone did, and he did it in quite impressive fashion, winning the "Knockout of the Night" award.

Both fighters are highly adept strikers, but the bigger stronger Cerrone dropped his opponent with a devastation punch to Oliveira's solar plexus.

It was not the long drawn out war that many were expecting, but it was a virtuoso performance from "cowboy" against a fighter that many were considering the "virtuoso".

3. Alex Cacares vs Jimy Hettes

4 of 6

Alex Cacares probably had an advantaging in striking, but did not mind dabbling with ground fighting against his revered Jiu-Jitsu opponent Jimy Hettes.

That willingness to fight on the ground made for a dynamic and exciting back and forth war.  Commentator Joe Rogan said that it might have been the most transitions in a single round that he has seen in the UFC.

Unfortunately for Cacares, Hettes would not be denied as he eventually snagged a snazzy rear-naked choke from a standing side position to eventually finish the fight in the second round.

2. Jared Hamman vs C.B. Dollaway

5 of 6

I do not think Jared Hamman's first fight at middleweight could have been any more bumpy.

After a first round that saw Hamman get rocked with a number of big punches and saw him miraculously escape a seemingly cinched in arm-triangle choke, Hamman was able to come away with the victory in the second round.

A number of experts who were observing the bout considered the first round to be a 10-8 round for Dollaway.

Hamman's ability to storm back and finish the durable wrestler in the second round is nothing short of inspiring.

1. Dan Hardy vs Chris Lytle

6 of 6

In a night full of great fights, I still think that the headliner took the cake.

The two headliners promised fireworks, and they delivered.  Hardy dispelled of any notions that he had a weak chin by eating up some of the biggest shots that Lytle had to offer- and dishing out some excellent punishment of his own.

Lytle finished the night with a climactic guillotine choke that put a stamp on the roller-coaster night of action.

Despite their relative ups and downs- Hardy and Lytle proved why they were selected as headliners for UFC Live.
