WWE SummerSlam: CM Punk's Early Return for SummerSlam Wasn't Worth It

Jun 7, 2018

After watching last night’s SummerSlam, fans can’t help but feel duped by the WWE.

Now former WWE Champion CM Punk had built a persona since his first shoot promo on Raw all those weeks ago, but the WWE threw it all away over the need for more money.

With the crowd thinking that Punk had quit but in reality he hadn't, the WWE had the power to do anything they wanted with him.

More videos like the one from Comic-Con could have surfaced, and Punk could have even showed up at former employer Ring of Honor’s first show on their new TV contract.

The WWE should have been slow playing the CM Punk angle while it built up steam in the underground wrestling community, but instead, they rushed Punk back to television.

It was the need to have Punk ready for last night’s show that killed the momentum of the Voice of the Voiceless persona, and the WWE has once again shot itself in the foot.

When asked about his stance on the CM Punk character returning to Raw so quickly, Punk said to Mark Madden’s radio show in Pittsburgh:

"

Now you’re getting into the numbers side of the business. Sure, I would have loved to drag it out. There’s a billion different scenarios you could have done.

I could have went and worked indies. I had the most ridiculous offers from the most unbelievable sources. I’ll write a book some day and it’ll be a hell of a chapter.

It would have been fun to go do commentary for like Titan Fighting Championship, it would have been fun to maybe show up at a ROH show or go bother Gabe at Evolve, do all kinds of fun stuff.

The bottom line is we have a TV show and a pay-per-view to sell. Basically it’s the hottest thing and you just kind of ride it until the wheels fall off. Could it have been done in a more entertaining way?

If everything is selling out and business is awesome, then yeah, maybe. Maybe.

"

It sounds like CM Punk is biting into the corporate pie here, but that’s to be expected when talking about millions of dollars.

Triple H was right, though, when he said on Raw that when you’re fighting over million dollar perks, you can’t be the Voice of the Voiceless anymore when you're flying first class.

Punk has become as fake as the rest of the WWE, and the company is to blame for killing his brand before it ever had a chance to blossom.

SummerSlam was supposed to be CM Punk’s coming out party, but instead in turned into a boring match that concluded with Punk being jackknifed and then pinned to lose the title he had just won.

What SummerSlam showed me is that the WWE doesn’t trust, nor will it ever trust, CM Punk to carry a match by himself.

Triple H has made it abundantly clear that he has to be involved with all of the biggest matches in the WWE and the WWE needs John Cena near the belt on Raw, so Punk has become the Paper Champion needed to make the jump to Triple H and Cena feuding for the belt.

Further proving the weakness of Punk’s ability to get a rise out of the crowd was the appearance of both former WWE star Kevin Nash and Money in the Bank winner Alberto Del Rio.

WWE felt that the only way to get the match and feud over with the crowd was by adding more to it.

The only reason a company would do that is because they know Punk is good at what he does, but people don’t care enough about him.

I’m glad Del Rio took the WWE Title from CM Punk because he didn’t deserve it in the first place. The only person who should have a gripe with what happened last night is John Cena.

If the WWE could get John Cena involved in the title shot on Raw Monday night with Rey Mysterio and Del Rio, which would be the way to handle it with no more trouble.

Cena is a much more deserving champion than CM Punk is or ever will be.
