Fantasy Football Sleepers: 5 Receivers to Keep Your Eye on
With the regular season just around the corner, it's time to get out your laptops and join a fantasy football league!
Anyone who is a football fanatic knows that you can't go wrong by drafting players like Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Jennings and Andre Johnson.
But what do you do when they have been taken off the draft board?
In this slideshow, I have provided you with the five wide receivers I feel will have a breakout season this year. These players will most likely be mid- to late-round draft picks in your league, but you MUST keep an eye on these players as your fantasy football draft progresses.
Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons
1 of 5Julio Jones was the sixth overall pick of the Atlanta Falcons in this year's NFL Draft. The Falcons traded up a whopping 21 picks and gave up 2011 and 2012 first-round picks, a 2011 second-round pick, and both 2011 and 2012 fourth-round picks.
If Atlanta is willing to give up so much, this guy must have a lot of potential!
The 6'3", 220-pound physical phenom and blocking extraordinaire will surely be a part of the Atlanta Falcons future.
In Jones's three years as a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, he posted 2,653 receiving yards, averaged 14.78 yards per catch and recorded 15 touchdown receptions. In his last year as a Crimson Tide, he set the single-season record for both receiving yards (1,133) and receptions (78).
Jones should definitely be a candidate for your second or third receiver in all fantasy leagues. Don't expect him to put up Andre Johnson-type numbers, but expect a breakout season from Mr. Jones.
NFL.com Projections: 604 receiving yards, 4 touchdown receptions
Jacoby Ford, Oakland Raiders
2 of 5The Oakland Raiders selected Jacoby Ford in Round 4 with the 108th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Even though Ford ran a 4.28-second 40-yard dash (the fastest of the 2010 draft class), he was in a loaded wide receiver draft class that included Demaryius Thomas (Broncos), Dez Bryant (Cowboys), Arrelious Benn (Buccaneers) and Mike Williams (Buccaneers). This being said, I think the fourth round was a reasonable position for Jacoby Ford.
In his rookie season, Jacoby Ford, all 5'9", 185 pounds of him, had 25 receptions, 470 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns and averaged 18.8 yards per catch.
Oakland struggled last year to establish a starting quarterback, so the numbers Ford posted were relatively good. With Bruce Gradkowski out of the picture, Jason Campbell should get the majority of the snaps at quarterback this year, so Ford may be able to build a little chemistry with him. Expect Ford to be a low-end No. 2 receiver to a high-end No. 3 receiver in your fantasy league.
NFL.com Projections: 413 receiving yards, 1 touchdown reception
A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals
3 of 5A.J. Green was the fourth overall draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in this year's NFL Draft.
The former Georgia Bulldog, Green has had a prolific college career winning awards such as 2008 SEC Freshman of the Year (Coaches), 2008 All-SEC First Team (AP), and 2009 All-SEC First Team (ESPN, Coaches).
With a 6'4", 211-pound stature, there is no doubt in my mind Green was built to be an NFL wide receiver. In his three years at the University of Georgia, Green recorded 2,619 receiving yards, 23 touchdown receptions and averaged 15.8 yards per catch. Keep in mind that he was suspended the first four regular-season games of the 2010 season, so his numbers are not as great as they could have been.
Because Andy Dalton is the quarterback in Cincinnati, Green will most likely put up lighter numbers than he would have if Carson Palmer was the quarterback. This being said, A.J. Green will be a solid second receiver option in your draft.
NFL.com Projections: 853 receiving yards, eight touchdown receptions
Danny Amendola, St. Louis Rams
4 of 5Danny Amendola went undrafted in the 2008 NFL Draft and struggled to get off the practice squads of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.
I have no idea how this happened!
When Mark Clayton and Donnie Avery went down early last year, Danny Amendola emerged. Amendola posted 85 receptions, 689 receiving yards and three touchdowns, leading the Rams in both receptions and receiving yards.
Amendola is only 5'11" and 186 pounds, but he has the heart of a lion. He wants to play every snap of the game and every time he gets drilled by a defender, he pops right back up.
Going into his second year as quarterback, Sam Bradford should have a tremendous season this year and Amendola will remain his No. 1 target. Amendola won't record a lot of touchdowns, but he is still good enough for the second receiver position on your fantasy team.
NFL.com Projections: 594 receiving yards, two touchdown receptions
Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys
5 of 5Dez Bryant was the 24th overall pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2010 NFL Draft.
In three years with the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Bryant recorded 2,425 receiving yards, 1,480 of those yards in 2009. He also posted 29 touchdown receptions and averaged 16.8 yards per catch.
In his first year with Dallas, Bryant's stats took a dip when Tony Romo injured his collar bone. Bryant was still able to muster 45 receptions and 561 receiving yards.
At 6'2" and 225 pounds, Bryant is a can't-miss receiver especially since Romo is now back and healthy. Expect Bryant to be a low-end No. 1 to a high-end No. 2 fantasy option because he will most likely share receptions with Miles Austin.
