If Each NHL Team Were a Stock, Who Would You Buy, Sell or Hold?

Ben CousinsJun 3, 2018

Stocks are always a gamble.

You can never know what the future entails, you can only guess.

This is why perceiving organizations as stocks is such an interesting concept. You can never truly have a perfect guess as to how a team will fair. There are just way too many factors to have an accurate estimation.

Here are a couple of teams that if they were stocks I would, based on last season and the future, buy, sell or hold their stocks.

As always, feel free to comment, I'm always Interested in your opinion.

BUY: Edmonton Oilers

1 of 6

With the last two first overall picks, the Edmonton Oilers are certainly on the rise.

Drafts picks seem to be the way to rebuild an organization. First the Pittsburgh Penguins, then the Chicago Blackhawks and it looks like the Oilers are primed to follow suit.

The Oilers may not make the playoffs this season, however in the next few years they should be the team to watch.

Goaltending does provide a concern, but the Oilers have many assets to try and trade for one.

This is definitely a stock to invest in.

BUY: Ottawa Senators

2 of 6

After a disappointing 2010-11 season, the Senators seem poised for a quick turn around.

That season, the Sens had a whack of injuries to some of the team's best players, many of whom will be healthy by this season.

At the trade deadline, the Senators acquired goaltender Craig Anderson, who finished the season very strong.

The Senators have a strong crop of young players that will make an impact this season. They may even contend for a playoff position this year.

This is a stock to buy for a quick profit.

SELL: Detroit Red Wings

3 of 6

The Detroit Red Wings are getting old, really old.

The Red Wings have been a great team for the last decade, that may change this season.

Many of the Red Wings' players from this era are either retired or on the verge of doing so.

Unless the legacy of Detroit's draft excellence continues, I don't really see the Red Wings seriously contending in the next couple years.

I think that the Red Wings are a team to sell.

SELL: Philadelphia Flyers

4 of 6

The Philadelphia Flyers have made major changes with their roster.

The acquisition of Ilya Bryzgalov will be a huge help to their goaltending woes. However, the trades of both Jeff Carter and Mike Richards will hurt them.

There will be growing pains with the new roster, that is certain.

I think that this season may be a bit of a wash and they will be back by next season.

I would probably sell the Flyers stock.

HOLD: Pittsburgh Penguins

5 of 6

The Penguins failed to make the second round of the playoffs, however, this is no reason to count them out this season.

Sidney Crosby missed the entire second half of the season with a concussion. Evgeni Malkin missed a majority of the season with a leg injury.

These are two of the best players in the entire league, let alone the Penguins' organization.

Both of these players should be back to start this season and barring another injury-riddled year, the Penguins will be back to regular form.

I would hold on to the Penguins stock.

HOLD: New Jersey Devils

6 of 6

Before last season, I would have bought as much New Jersey Devils' stock as I could afford.

Halfway through the season, I would have pulled my hair out.

Now, that investment might not look so bad. Zach Parise seems to be healing fine and back to normal.

The New Jersey Devils look to be finally headed towards where the organization thought they were going, a long playoff run.

I would hold on to my New Jersey Devils' stock.
