Arsenal FC: Arsene Wenger Could Learn from Kenny Dalgish

Arun MJun 7, 2018

Arsenal announced today that they have reached an agreement in principle with Barcelona for Cesc Fabregas to move to Spain.

Now that Fabregas is leaving and about £35 million will be added to the transfer funds, it's time Wenger learned something from Liverpool's boss Kenny Dalgish.

After selling Fernando Torres in the January transfer window, Dalgish not only bought a world class striker in Suarez, but also signed Andy Carrol to form a formidable attacking pair.

Wenger should do the same.

In the absence of Fabregas, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere have the ability to step up, but for a team that boasts of fighting in four fronts, it is time to get an experienced midfielder.

Juan Manuel Mata can be signed if Arsenal's board makes a bid of around £25 million to get talks going again.

Eden Hazard seems to be a promising talent who has proved his skills in Lille FC. After signing Gervinho, Lille FC President Michel Seydoux was adamant that he won’t let him make the switch to the Emirates, but Wenger could get Hazard if he starts bidding for him.

With the funds generated from the sale of Fabregas and Bendtner, Wenger needs to work to get Mata and Hazard.

Defense seems to be the team's main area of concern, so it seems likely that Wenger will sign a central defender. With the funds available to him, getting Christopher Samba or Gary Cahill and Scott Dann would not be a problem.

After selling Gael Clichy for £7 million, Wenger should have bought Jose Enrique from Newcastle United. Sadly, Liverpool signed him for a rumoured £6 million. Keiran Gibbs is doing good work at left back, but an experienced Enrique would have greatly added to Arsenal's strength.

While the fund received from Clichy’s departure will be enough to fund Dann’s transfer, the remaining amount from Fabregas’s departure should be used to buy Samba.

The funds obtained from selling Nasri can be unused or Gary Cahill can be bought instead of Samba. Another midfielder can be bought if necessary and if Wenger spends all of the funds obtained from the sale of players, it will be a win-win situation for the team and the club.

All of this can happen only if Wenger shows interest in spending the transfer funds.

Wenger may say that his team has depth and is capable of winning trophies, but that has not been proven so far.

Apart from Robin Van Persie, there are no other striker options for Wenger as Chamakh cannot be expected to play that role and Bendtner is leaving soon.

The absence of Fabregas and Nasri has also raised serious questions about the depth in Arsenal's midfield.

In the game against Newcastle United—when the defense was good—the attack did not pose as serious of a threat as expected. This has led to Gunners fans demanding Wenger to sign quality players before this transfer window ends.

After the signing of Joel Campbell, there was this tweet that made me think:

"Do u think Arsene's reluctance to sign defenders is due to our "Forward" slogan on our 125th anniversary crescent? He has bought another CF!"

I hope that is not the case with Arsene Wenger, but fans are still waiting for a few defensive and midfield signings from him before the end of this transfer window.
