WWE SummerSlam 2011 Results: What's Next for Cena and Punk Following PPV?
WWE SummerSlam 2011 ended in controversy as Alberto Del Rio cashed in his money in the bank after C.M. Punk defeated John Cena with a controversial pin. Del Rio is now the heavyweight champion, and Punk and Cena have unfinished business to take care of.
Punk got the pin over Cena while Cena had his foot on the rope, and Triple H failed to see it and counted to three. While Punk was celebrating, Kevin Nash blindsided him and laid him out with a jackknife power bomb.
Del Rio capitalized, kicked Punk in the head and pinned the newly-crowned champ to become the heavyweight champion.
So where should the WWE go from here?
Cena vs. Punk for the No. 1 Contendership
1 of 3Raw should open up Monday with Triple H explaining the situation and getting cutoff mid-sentence by Punk followed by Cena. No surprises there.
The two should get into it with one another verbally and set up a main event between the two for the No. 1 contender status. Once the match happens, the match should end in controversy (once again)with no clear winner.
Raw ends and this sets up for more answers to be answered the following week.
Triple Threat Announced for the Title
2 of 3Once Raw ends the following week, the WWE should have set up a triple threat match for WWE’s next PPV between Del Rio, Punk and Cena for the strap.
This not only will be another big draw for the company but has the potential to be a very entertaining match. Between the time this match is announced to when the match takes place, the WWE should reveal tidbits as to why Nash did what he did at Summerslam.
A smart move by the company would be to link Nash with Triple H and really play up the Punk rebelling against the system storyline. Fans can really sink their teeth into that one.
Triple Threat Results
3 of 3Del Rio needs the strap for now, so he should come out of this one as the champion and even though I’m not a fan of run-ins, this match calls for one.
Triple H and Nash should cost Punk the belt and set up a rivalry between Triple H and Punk. This rivalry has the potential to go down as one of the all-time greats. Both men have great mic skills, especially Triple H as a heel, and can deliver great matches in the ring.
This could be WWE’s modern day Stone Cold/Vince McMahon rivalry except it would possess potential for great matches. The WWE is hot right now, and they want to stay hot as long as they can. Keep playing up Punk as a rebel and turn Triple H heel to keep things interesting.
