Just moments ago, Alberto Del Rio became the new WWE Champion by cashing-in his Money in the Bank briefcase against CM Punk at WWE’s biggest show of the summer, SummerSlam.
What will happen next?
With Del Rio as champion, Punk will no doubt get his rematch. Assuming that’s the case, it will most likely happen at Night of Champions.
However, since both Punk and Cena were recognized as the champion before the match, Cena should have a legitimate claim to a rematch as well. If that happens, we’ll probably see a triple threat match at the September pay-per-view.
As most of you know, Rey Mysterio will be challenging for the title on Monday Night Raw. However, with the injury to his knee, it's unlikely he’ll be winning the title. That being said, in the event that he does win, I think we’ll end up with a fatal four-way match at Night of Champions.
Of course, we have to factor in Kevin Nash, or Diesel, or whatever he is going to go by, too. Del Rio cashed in the MITB briefcase after Nash delivered a jackknife power-bomb to Punk, much to the surprise of Triple H.
How will Big Sexy play into all of this? Will we see Nash vs. Punk, or will Triple H want to take care of Nash himself? We could very well see Nash placed in the title picture in what will no doubt be his final run in a WWE ring.
Other than the obvious choices above, I see five other possible challengers for Alberto Del Rio.
Those five are: The Miz, R-Truth, John Morrison, Kofi Kingston and United States Champion Dolph Ziggler.
Morrison and Kingston would be the most likely challengers as they are faces. Both are highly talented inside the ring and could put on some great matches with the champion. Kingston has already proven on Raw that he is capable of having a good match with Del Rio. On the other hand, Morrison’s chances are in the negatives. The hot rumor is that he will leave the WWE once his contract expires in a few months.
The heels have a much slimmer chance of getting a title shot against their fellow heel. Truth and Miz are deep into their heel characters and I don’t see a face turn in the near future for either man.
The only heel that I see possibly being a challenger to Del Rio is Dolph Ziggler. He seems to be fighting with Vickie Guerrero, and seeing them break up could well see a potential Ziggler face turn.
However, to challenge for the top prize on Raw, he’ll have to drop the United States title first.
So, what will happen now that Del Rio is the WWE champion? Time will tell. I think we’ll get our answer at the end of his match against Rey Mysterio tomorrow night on Raw.
