UFC on Versus 5 Results: 3 Fights Joseph Benavidez Should Take Next

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

Sunday night, Joe-B-Wan Kenobi showed why he is one of the best bantamweights in the world, when he handed Eddie Wineland his second straight loss by unanimous decision.

Joe-B-Wan, better known as Joseph Benavidez, was able to outstrike the former champion en route to his third win in a row, since a title fight loss to Dominick Cruz.

Benavidez is 15-2 in his career, and his only losses have both come at the hands of Cruz.

Cruz already has a fight announced, and there is already a No. 1 contender's match announced, so Benavidez will have to wait a little bit for a fight, but when he gets it, here are three good possibilities for who he'll be matched up against.

Loser of Cruz/ Johnson

1 of 4

The first potential fight for Benavidez would be against the loser of the Cruz/ Johnson title match.

Benavidez has already met up with Cruz twice, losing the first fight by unanimous decision, and the second by split decision.

He hasn't fought Johnson, but should Demetrious lose, Benavidez could beat him, and parlay that into a second title shot.

Loser of Faber/ Bowles

2 of 4

This is the No. 1 contender's match for the bantamweight title.

Both of these fighters, Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles, have both fought against Cruz already.

Faber has fought Cruz twice, most recently losing a unanimous decision when challenging for the bantamweight title.

Bowles fought Cruz when Bowles held the bantamweight championship, and he lost via TKO due to a broken hand after the second round.

Either of these two could come out of this fight the victor, and either of these two could lose and end up taking on Benavidez.

The only problem with this, is that Faber and Benavidez are training partners.

Would they be willing to put that aside?

Anybody in the Flyweight Division

3 of 4

This one depends on a lot of things.

It depends when Benavidez wants to get back in the Octagon.

It depends when the UFC adds the flyweight class.

It depends if there are any worthwhile fights for him there in the beginning.

And it depends on whether or not he thinks he could win the title in the bantamweight division.

But Benavidez could drop to flyweight and immediately be a title contender.
