WWE SummerSlam 2011 Opens with an Exciting 6-Man Tag Match

Tom ClarkJun 4, 2018

So, what do you do when you have half a dozen guys you don’t have room on the card for? Throw them in a six-man tag match of course.

The Miz, Alberto Del Rio and R-Truth faced off against Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, and John Morrison in the opening bout of SummerSlam. The match did not disappoint as all six men turned in fine performances.

The crowd was definitely into it and popped heavily for Del Rio. I have to say, I am still surprised at the booking of this guy. He is the RAW Money in the Bank winner and it seems as though he’s just not getting much.

He constantly works hard and deserves all the credit for getting his character over in a big way as one of the top heels.

R-Truth looked good as well; he always seems to be on point in his matches. For me, even considering his recent push on RAW, he is still one of the most underrated wrestlers in the locker room.

Morrison did what he always does, and he seems to be getting more polished lately in his ring work, which is a good thing for him. He has been accused of being a little too careless in the ring, and it does appear as though he’s listened to his critics.

Kofi, well, he was Kofi.

The guy excites every time he’s in the ring. He’s a high-flyer with youthful energy, and there will always be a place for him in WWE.

The Miz was actually the one guy that seemed to not be very involved in this match. This for me is surprising because he has been pushed as being one of the top heels in the company for a while now. But for him to be relegated to a six-man tag with no championship implications?

Perhaps the Alex Riley face turn had a more negative impact on Miz than previously expected. Only time will tell as to what will happen next for the former WWE Champion.

Rey Mysterio got the pin in the match, and despite the fact that he is a veteran who is reportedly winding down in his career, he is still over.

The crowd loves Rey and he will remain one of the favorites in the company for as long as he is in the locker room.

It was a good opening match. It accomplished what a curtain jerk is supposed to—it set the tone. High spots, some nice action and six of the brightest stars in WWE.

If SummerSlam continues along this vein, then it will be a good pay-per-view.
