4 Reasons the Miami Dolphins Should Sign Tiki Barber
Sure, the Dolphins added a quality running back in Reggie Bush this offseason, but could newly available Tiki Barber add some bang to the running game?
Despite the possibility of flopping, wouldn't you say the upside Barber brings to the table is intriguing?
Whether he returned because he loves the game or because he is now bankrupt, if Barber can produce on the field, then the Dolphins had better take a long, hard look before passing him off as just another free agent.
Experience, Experience, Experience
1 of 4With more than four times as many carries as Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas combined, Barber would bring a wealth of experience to the backfield.
Experience is something not easily duplicated, and is an asset when dissecting a valuable NFL running back.
While there is some wear on the tires, Barber may have just enough left in the tank for a couple of solid seasons.
Valuable Mentor to Rookie Daniel Thomas
2 of 4Learning from an experienced veteran can be the most valuable asset in a young player's career, especially when it comes to a position like running back.
This could set up an ideal situation for the Dolphins, who would allow second-round pick Daniel Thomas to develop while still earning a solid amount of carries. It would be foolish to allow Thomas to garner most of the load in just his rookie season.
Barber would tutor the youngster and provide just enough slack in the form of carries to prevent Thomas from deteriorating over the vigorous 16-plus game slate of the NFL.
Bang for Your Buck
3 of 4Dolphins owner Stephen Ross would be hard-pressed to find a better value at the running back position.
Despite being out of the game for multiple years, Barber without question brings a wealth of talent to the equation.
Add the fact that the Dolphins could probably get away with paying him the veteran minimum, and you have an equation that can't go wrong.
If Barber turns out to be a valuable asset to the team, then you're getting a bargain. If he turns out to be just an old, washed-up running back then you simply paid him a little over $1 million for one season.
Wouldn't you take a chance on the potential Hall of Famer for a year?
Reggie Bush Is a Better Weapon on the Outside
4 of 4It is no mystery that Reggie Bush is better suited to perform outside the tackles. Whether it be as a slot receiver or via speciality plays like tosses and reverses, Bush's frame simply can't withstand the constant beating between the tackles.
What better way to not only take the load of off Bush, but also utilize him in the best way possible for the entire offense?
Could you imagine an offense with Brandon Marshall, Bush, Davone Bess and Brian Hartline lined up out wide?
It could lead to some scary possibilities down the field, but this is only attainable should the Dolphins develop a serviceable running back aside from Bush. Daniel Thomas is a potential suitor, but I wouldn't mind seeing Tiki Barber back there, and I'm sure a desperate Tony Sparano would agree.
