WWE SummerSlam 2011 Results: What We Learned from CM Punk's Win and Loss

Jon Fisher@@Jonfisher21Correspondent IIAugust 15, 2011

The title seems misleading, doesn't it? For those who didn't watch the pay-per-view, let me reminisce about the final 10 minutes of SummerSlam.

CM Punk and John Cena put on another great match. From near falls, to submission grappling and even a tribute to the late great Macho Man, it was arguably a five-star match. In a last ditch effort, CM Punk hit another GTS on Cena and went for the cover near the ropes.

Cena put his foot on the bottom rope, but HHH didn't see it and counted the 1-2-3. CM Punk was named the WWE Undisputed champion. What actually took place during the three-count? Did HHH not see Cena's foot or did he simply choose to ignore it?

Cena had a few words with HHH about the situation, but Trips refused to reverse the decision and it looked like Punk was the champion.

Then destiny came full circle.

Kevin Nash, aka Diesel, ran down the runway out of nowhere and delivered his signature Jackknife Powerbomb to a beaten-down Punk.

As Nash ran away, Alberto Del Rio came running down the runway with briefcase in hand and a referee to his left. Despite his failed attempts at Money in the Bank and an episode of Raw, this time it was official.

Immediately, Del Rio hit a swift enziguri to Punk and the 1-2-3 was counted. Now Alberto Del Rio, the Mexican Aristocrat, was deemed the new WWE champion.

It's no secret that WWE has a Mexican tour planned for this fall and that Del Rio was going to end up with the title eventually. To the IWC's dismay, Del Rio is holding the title just after SummerSlam.

After the broadcast cut to black, Punk picked up the briefcase and walked toward the back under roars of Punk chants and cheers. Meanwhile, HHH was flabbergasted that Nash appeared and was furious with the ref, who counted to three for Alberto.

So what exactly did we learn from Punk's win and loss?

HHH Screwing Cena?

Like I briefly mentioned above, John Cena's foot was on the ropes before the clock struck three. This has happened many times before, but this time the scenario was a bit different.

WWE threw us a curveball with the Punk/Stephanie McMahon interaction earlier on in the show. For those who missed it, CM Punk called Stephanie idiotic and made a sexual reference to HHH and Stephanie, which was hilarious.

Fans figured CM Punk would be the one to get "screwed." Alas, the opposite might have occurred. This brings upon us more storyline opportunities for WWE creative to throw at us. Raw will hopefully answer our storyline questions. For example, could we possibly see a HHH or Cena heel turn?

CM Punk is the Most "Over" WWE Superstar

I could get in trouble for saying this, but Punk is over with the crowd and had the best pop of the night. Okay, Edge and Punk are tied.

Whether you hear booing or cheering, Punk is definitely up there with Cena and Orton as far as crowd reaction. Call me crazy, but isn't that one of the main things McMahon wants in the face of the WWE?

Tell me if I'm reading too much into the situation, but Punk is backing up what he said. He is making the WWE fun again and tonight he proved that. With each CM Punk t-shirt on back order, Vince is laughing in his office praising the new revenue monster.

Three Superstars Have Rematch Clauses in Effect

Rey Mysterio, CM Punk and John Cena each earn a rematch for the WWE championship against Alberto Del Rio, the new champion. Rumor has it that Mysterio will use his rematch clause tonight on Raw.

Mysterio lost to John Cena in a match for the WWE championship three weeks ago on Raw after winning the WWE championship tournament Vince put together.

Cena now has a rematch clause after his loss to CM Punk last night. CM Punk will also receive a rematch due to Del Rio's cash-in after his match.

With three deserved superstars with rematch clauses to invoke, I predict a fatal four-way match at Night of Champions for the WWE championship. Or is that too predictable?

Kevin Nash "Big Sexy" is Back

Did anyone see this coming? Sure Edge returning tonight could have been predicted after he was advertised for SummerSlam Axxess, but Kevin Nash?

The thing that intrigued me the most was that HHH looked befuddled the whole time. WWE fans understand the clique connection between them, so a HHH and Nash reunion to bury Punk seemed logical once we saw Diesel rushing the ring.

Kevin Nash returned to the WWE in the 2011 Royal Rumble, hitting a couple of finishers before he was eliminated. Since then, he hasn't been on WWE or in a ring. His legend contract had him doing practically nothing more than autograph signings and publicity events.

Big Sexy's last WWE match was at SummerSlam 2003 in an elimination chamber match for the World Heavyweight championship. Eight years later, he returned at SummerSlam 2011 and made a major impact on the CM Punk/John Cena/HHH feud.
