PGA Championship 2011: 7 Golfers Who May Surprise with a Strong Finish

Immer ChriswellJun 7, 2018

Tomorrow the pressure cooker will be on full heat. And it's the rookie and the 34 year old with seemingly no pulse.

However tomorrow we will see the blood pumping. Should his round go south we could see Jason Dufner fall out of contention and into a irritated state.

Tomorrow afternoon over par looks to be the way things will go. 270 yard par three, one of the most challenging finishing holes in a major, and hard greens look to pave the way for a comeback win.

Should the pressure come down hard on the top three, most of whom have little to no major experience, there is a slew of names that could spring from nowhere into hot contention or a respectable finish.

Let's be serious though. Phil Mickelson or Luke Donald posting low is no shock, so that's where they're off this list. However, there are a few others who aren't exempt

Matt Kuchar

1 of 7

Just as he has for almost the past two years Matt Kuchar is lurking in the background of the tournament. He hasn't done anything spectacular, but is sitting at even par for the tournament.

Kuchar shot an two under 68 today to bring himself inside the top 20.

Kuchar is definitely someone that the state of Georgia would love to see finish well. With a solid three or four under tomorrow, he should be sitting with a top ten finish.

Lee Westwood

2 of 7

He's a regular contender but not too regular a closer. Lee Westood has extremely limited success in majors, never winning one to date.

Tomorrow probably won't be any different a story but that doesn't mean Westwood can't thrill tomorrow. Sitting at one under par Westwood is in prime position to move to five under.

On a day where over par will probably rule the final day scores Westwood could be in striking distance to pressure the leaders as they enter the final four holes.

Charl Schwartzel

3 of 7

We've seen what he can do at Augusta but right now he's five off the lead. He hasn't been shown too much on TV or talked about despite his major.

However, after what we've seen from Charl this year it seems that nothing is impossible. It may be a stretch but Schwartzel could walk away with a Wannamaker to go with that green jacket.

Sergio Garcia

4 of 7

He's one of twelve players to make the cut at all four majors this year however contending hasn't been his strong suit. He played well at the US Open but faltered because of a shoddy putter.

Garcia sits at even par, a great position with no pressure attached to it.

Shooting three under tomorrow would put Garcia in a top 15 spot and show the progress in Garcia's game.

He still has a long way to go but could keep moving with a great finish tomorrow.

Scott Verplank

5 of 7

Although it may not seem a shock for Scott Verplank to finish strong after the first three rounds but consider everything.

Verplank is 47 and hasn't contended seriously in a long time. For him to be sitting so close to the lead is a revelation.

There's a serious chance that he wins tomorrow. If he did, it would come as a serious surprise to anyone who's watched Verplank for so many years. A 47 year old showing the youth on tour that the old guys still have it would be a storyline only eclipsed by Tom Watson's Open Championship run on Stewart Cink.

David Toms

6 of 7

After a stunning round of 65 David Toms looks to have a good chance to impress tomorrow.

However following up a third round 65 with another three or four under will not be as easy as it seems. Toms will have to control and manage his game even better than today.

Tomorrow's course will show teeth not seen yet in any rounds.

However the 65 showed that the sky is the limit for Toms, and he could very well see some contention going into the final four holes.

D.A. Points

7 of 7

Riding a rollercoaster of emotions D.A. Points posted 71 today. The ride started with a double bogey on eight.

From there, Points would birdie five and bogey three of the next eight holes, making no pars. He would then par in to put himself in a tie for sixth place.

Points wears his emotions on his sleeve. However tomorrow he's going to have to find a way to suppress the emotions. The chances look pretty good for Points' name to be thrust in the spotlight and the 20 some pound trophy thrust into his hands.
