WWE SummerSlam: Top 5 Matches in SummerSlam History

Now we arrive to the best part of my ongoing "SummerSlam Series"—the best matches. When you think of best matches, some will think of Angle vs HBK. Some will think of Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart. Some will think of Austin vs Rock.

One will even think of Melina vs. Alicia Fox. Hey! I don't blame her (honestly). Everyone has their favorites, and that is cool. Today, we are just going to focus on SummerSlam and what made this even so memorable in the first place—epic matches.

There are no ground rules for this list. If it happened at SummerSlam, it is in the running. With that being all said...let's do this thing!

5. Bret vs Bulldog

Yes, I said this match was overrated. Yes, I said this match was a disappointment. However, yes, I also said I enjoyed this match a lot.

As most of you know by now, I was too young to have seen this match live, so that likely hurts this rating a great deal to me (and others).

With all those little qualifiers, this match deserves to crack the top five. Great match. Probably the best of its kind almost 20 years. When you line up all the amazing matches nowadays, this one does not even come close. Sorry!

4. Cena vs Batista

I have touched on this bout many times now in my "SummerSlam Series", but that does not take anything away from this classic. The two top guys in the business going at it for the first time ever!

That alone should sell any PPV to a fan. You throw in the great hype, and the high expectations going in, you have yourselves No. 4 on my list. The icing on the cake? A clean winner, and a clean loser. No BS, no outside garbage. Just a one on one match.

It may not be a popular pick, but re-watch this match, and you will see why it deserves all the love in the world....and more!

3. HBK vs Hogan

Didn't expect this one, huh? That is fine, let me bring you back a few years...

Hogan had just come back and wanted to have a few more matches. Well, HBK wanted just one match—versus Hogan. One superkick and a shocking ending to Raw later, Summerslam's main event was set.

This match more than lived up to its billing, and even though HBK "acted up" during this bout, it was clearly a classic that many fans were into and loved the build-up for (as well as the actual bout).

One of the highest "NON WM" buy rates for this pay-per-view, and one of the highest WWE ratings in the past 6 years, and you can thank Hogan and HBK for that (and Vince!).

2. HBK vs HHH

The funny thing about this match is the fact that it "never happened". I loved that little gem during this storyline back in 2002.

We all know the story here. HBK was out of the WWE for four years due to back surgery, and if he came back, why not do it with Triple H? Well, all the pieces fell into place, and the match WAS ON!

A great 20 minute brawl between the two legends, with Jim Ross calling action—what more could you ask for? The live crowd was behind Shawn Michaels, as was myself nine years ago.

When you throw in all the factors of the backstage happenings, and the post match attack (which MADE this match), you have the second greatest SummerSlam match in history.

Now...my No. 1 pick that I am sure most already figured out...

1. TLC: Hardys/Dudleyz/Edge and Christian

There is no doubt about this one at all. I never even blinked on putting this as the best match ever being held at SummerSlam.

I have said it before, but it is matches like this that finally put WCW and ECW out of their misery over a decade ago. There was just no way to compare the companies anymore. WWE was on top, and there was no argument.

Of course, with three teams going out there to do everything they can to steal the show, what did you expect? I know what I expected—classic, and I got it!
