4 Undrafted Rookies That Could Make the St. Louis Rams' Roster
Every year, there are players who come from seemingly nowhere to make an impact for an NFL team. Whether they weren't drafted because of health concerns or character concerns, those players are out to prove themselves.
Last season, we saw a prime example of it. LeGarrette Blount was a good talent coming out of college, but nobody wanted to touch him because of his infamous punch. Well 1,000 yards later, Blount is now a starting running back.
The Rams signed 24 undrafted free agents to contracts. In reality, only two or three will be on the opening day roster.
This slideshow is an attempt to discover these hidden gems that the Rams may have signed.
Kevin Hughes, OL
1 of 4Kevin Hughes is an offensive lineman from Southeastern Louisiana. He played guard in college before switching to tackle and it is unclear where the Rams will want him to play.
Hughes has good size at 6'4", 302 pounds. His chances of making the squad got a lot better when the Rams waived another undrafted free agent, Bryant Browning. Many people thought Browning had the best shot at making the Rams, but obviously, they see something in Kevin Hughes.
He is one of 10 offensive lineman trying to make the roster. His versatility gives him a good shot at making the 53 man roster because there are only three guards, not including Adam Goldberg.
Taylor Potts, QB
2 of 4Taylor Potts had an excellent career at Texas Tech. He threw for 3,400 yards as a junior, then 3,700 yards as a senior.
There is no doubt that Potts had great success in college, but the concern is that the offense he played in doesn't translate to the NFL. Potts will likely never start a game with the Rams, but he will compete with second year man Thaddeus Lewis for the third quarterback slot.
His battle with Thaddeus Lewis will depend on the type of quarterback Josh McDaniels is looking for. Lewis is a mobile quarterback who stands at just 6'0." If McDaniels is looking for a pocket passer, than Potts may be the guy because he stands at 6'5." It appears that McDaniels may favor Lewis because Potts barely played in the Week One preseason game.
Kenneth Charles, DE
3 of 4Kenneth Charles is a defensive tackle who was converted to defensive end at Stephen F. Austin. He is 6'3", 266 pounds.
Charles will have a difficult time making the roster because the Rams have three locks for roster spots at defensive end with Chris Long, James Hall and Robert Quinn sure to make the team. Young defensive ends C.J. Ah You and George Selvie also showed promise last season.
If Charles makes the roster, it will be because he continues to improve his pass rush. He went from a combined 20 tackles and four sacks in two seasons at Stephen F. Austin to 44 tackles and 11.5 sacks in his final season.
John Dempsey, DB
4 of 4John Dempsey is a player that had an extremely productive career at Villanova. I'm interested in watching him during the preseason because I can't figure out why he wasn't drafted.
Dempsey played in every game except for one in his four year career at Villanova. He picked up five interceptions in his career and made 161 unassisted tackles. That's just unassisted tackles alone. He also displayed leadership while at Villanova. He was a captain his junior and senior years.
So then I though, "Maybe he's not a very athletic player." Dempsey ran a 4.53 second 40 yard dash at his pro day. Last time I checked, that's pretty impressive. He's a guy that I'm really rooting for even if he makes the team just as a special teamer.
