PGA Championship 2011 Leaderboard Update: Tiger Woods Struggles in First Round
The PGA Championship Leaderboard 2011 is looking as if Tiger Woods does not belong. He shot a 77 today for a plus seven, which could see him out of the PGA Championship at the end of the day.
Steve Stricker has the lead on the PGA Championship leaderboard at minus seven with a 63 performance in the first round. He is two shots ahead of Jerry Kelly (minus five), who is in second place.
Tiger started off the day with three birdies in the first five holes and was at minus three, which was one shot from the lead. He then had a double bogey and a bogey on the next two holes to return to par. On his last hole of the first nine he had another double bogey, finishing plus two. Most of his shots landed in the water or in the bunkers. He just had a really rough day of golf for someone with his athletic ability.
Tiger's last nine holes were even more dreadful, as he accumulated four bogeys, one birdie and another double bogey for a plus five. His great start helped him from doing even worse, but he still is not even close to winning this major. Tiger is winless since the JBWere Championship on November 15, 2009. He has also not won a Major since the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines on April 15, 2008.
This is the worst single round performance at the PGA Championship for Tiger Woods—and his worst performance at a Major since 1991. Hopefully he can stay for the second round. As of right now he is tied for 115th place.
Tiger Woods is one of my favorite golfers...well he used to be, until what happened with his wife and now his declining golfing career. Tiger is one of those iconic athletes from my generation, but as his career fades so does his ability to be a role model. It seems as if he has lost his ability to be a good golfer. His confidence is shot after his efforts in the first round at the PGA Championship today.
There is always next year, next tournament and the next Major for Tiger Woods. But he is 35 years old and injuries will soon affect his play even more than they do now. His decline has been so sudden that he may never win another Major, when several years ago many analysts thought he would break the record of 18 set by Jack Nicklaus.
Tiger Woods' career is definitely in jeopardy. Do you see him winning any more Majors...or any other golf tournaments? Or will he retire with only 14 majors?
