US Open 2011: Caroline Wozniacki's Exit in Toronto Could Be the End of Her Reign
It may still be a little early to predict who is going to win the US Open, but based on her recent performances in grand slams and masters events, Caroline Wozniacki will not win in New York.
The World No. 1's early exit in Toronto last night will be the start of a tough preparation period for the Dane.
Wozniacki, who confessed to struggling in blustery conditions, served seven double faults during her 6-4, 7-5 loss to Roberta Vinci. Last year's US Open semifinalist has a lot of work to do.
There has been a great deal of talk about whether Wozniacki is a worthy No. 1. The fact that she has won so many tournaments proves she is, but without a grand slam title her presence at the top of the women's game will be forever questioned.
Since the 2011 French Open, Wozniacki has rarely shown signs of winning a tournament with a strong field.
Wozniacki's third-round loss at Roland Garros was followed by her Copenhagen win. However—with no disrespect to her opponents—it was not a field she would expect to face in the latter stages of a slam.
At Wimbledon she was beaten in the fourth-round by Dominica Cibulcova before she retired against Sofia Arvidsson in Bastad.
Wozniacki needs a decent preparation before the US Open. She has to put this latest disappointment behind her if she is to reach her first grand slam final.
