Chelsea FC News: Is Andre Villas Boas the Right Guy for the Job?

Mike GoncalvesAug 10, 2011

Andre Villas Boas joins Chelsea FC after a dream season at FC Porto last year. However, after joining FC Porto with only six months of top level coaching on his resume, many Portuguese football fans had there doubts about Villas Boas.

With a complete season behind him as head coach of Porto, Villas Boas has added some significant silverware to his resume in the past 12 months. He was successful in every competition he took part in with the exception of one—the Carlsberg Cup, which is equivalent to the Carling Cup in England.

Domestically, he won the Portuguese League as well as the Portuguese Cup and Supercup. Although he won the domestic title by a significant amount of points, the most prestigious title was won in a completely different country. Porto defeated SC Braga at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin to raise the Europa League Cup.

After Villas Boas' successful first season there was constant speculation regarding his whereabouts for the 2011/12 season. Many doubted he would continue in the hot seat for Porto. Some rumors had Villas Boas taking over the vacancy left by Leonardo at Inter Milan, while others had him taking over for Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.

Roman Abramovich would be the only one out of the three clubs who would even consider activating the £13.3 million release clause he had in his contract. So now that the new Chelsea manager has arrived, what can Blues fans expect from the Portuguese coach?

With comparisons from the media to fellow countrymen and friend, Jose Mourinho, Villas Boas has little margin for error—especially considering the amount of money spent on him and the small amount of patience Roman Abramovich has shown in previous years.

Although he may lack experience, Villas Boas has all of the necessary characteristics to be a success at Stamford Bridge. He is young, ambitious and hungry for success and titles. Plus, he has an owner willing to spend money if he feels confident in his coach and a solid squad that has an abundance of experience.

With leaders in the squad such as John Terry and Frank Lampard, Villas Boas will certainly look to them to help get his message across. The advantage of Villas Boas also being familiar with some of the players who were there when he was part of Jose Mourinho's coaching staff will also be a key factor. One last significant benefit for Villas Boas will be his knowledge of the English game as well as his familiarity with former Portugal players such as David Luiz, Ramires, Bosingwa and Paulo Ferreira.

Villas Boas will need patience from his players and fans as he starts off the season. They must give him time to implement his style of play, although it shouldn't take to long for them to get adapted. He has proven to be extremely technical and intricate when it comes to his strategies going into each match. He is willing to spend countless hours studying his opponent to guarantee his team's success.

Villas Boas has been handed all the pieces to an expensive puzzle and he now has the job of putting that puzzle together over the next nine to 10 months. I’m a firm believer that he will do just as Mourinho did and should be able to conquer the hearts of the Blues fans and ownership by bringing silverware to Stamford Bridge.
