WWE SummerSlam: 5 Matches We Should Be Seeing

Robert AitkenJun 7, 2018

With SummerSlam, the second biggest pay-per-view of the year behind WrestleMania, just three days away, it is rather shocking to know that there are just four matches announced. SummerSlam is often known to be a supercard of sorts. Even last year's event, which had only six matches, contained a lot of talent, including the seven-on-seven main event.

A performance by Cee Lo Green has already been announced, yet we don't know if we will see either the United States or Intercontinental Champions? Something doesn't make sense here. SummerSlam is not exactly the kind of event to announce matches on the night of the event. It would be similar to watching WrestleMania and Michael Cole saying, "Oh, by the way, here is a six-man tag match."

There has to be more matches on the way, unless they expect Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix to go 30 minutes in their Divas Championship match. With SmackDown slated to air tomorrow night, there may be more matches announced on that show. While I can acknowledge that I did read spoilers from Tuesday's tapings of SmackDown, I can assure you that none of those spoilers will be on these slides, nor will they be tolerated in comments.

With that said, here are five matches that could possibly be seen this Sunday on pay-per-view. I don't expect to see all five actually added, but these are all suggestions for this Sunday.

1) Anyone Against The Miz

1 of 5

Let me start you right off with one of the more interesting facts in WWE today. The Miz, the same man who walked into and walked out of the last WrestleMania as WWE Champion, has never had a match at any SummerSlam. In fact, if it wasn't for his appearance at last year's SummerSlam claiming to join John Cena's team against The Nexus, The Miz would literally be a no-show in his career at SummerSlam. Is that not incredible?

The video backstage of The Miz freaking out about not having a match this Sunday has been featured prominently on WWE.com, so you know that The Miz will at least show up. Will he get his match against somebody? Let's hope so. Does it matter who it is? Not really. Now that the feud with Alex Riley seems to be done and The Miz is being booked favorably once again, it would honestly be a shame to have a SummerSlam without one of the more prominent superstars today.

2) Dolph Ziggler Defending the United States Championship

2 of 5

While we are on the topic of prominent superstars today, Dolph Ziggler is the current United States Champion. Ziggler will hit eight weeks as champion on the night of SummerSlam. In that time, Ziggler has been impressive, but has all but floated under the radar as John Cena and CM Punk have dominated the brand. Ziggler can deliver a great SummerSlam moment and could use a big win at a big venue to establish his claim as a diamond in the rough.

3) Daniel Bryan vs. Wade Barrett

3 of 5

Judging by their feud on Smackdown, I bet that this match will be coming after all. Wade Barrett was my guy to win the Smackdown Money in the Bank briefcase. Instead, it went to Daniel Bryan, who was a favorite in nobody's eyes. Bryan has already said that he will cash in the briefcase for a WrestleMania match with the current World Heavyweight Champion at the time. The only other briefcase holder to make such a claim was Mr. Kennedy, who ended up losing his briefcase to Edge before he could even use it.

Even though Kennedy was injured, they may try to have lightning strike twice and have Bryan lose his chance to Barrett. Barrett's win at SummerSlam with that stipulation would give a near guarantee of a world championship from one NXT alum to another. The Internet can now explode with disapproval of Daniel Bryan missing out on being a world champion.

4) Intercontinental Championship Match

4 of 5

I refuse to spill on spoilers, so I will simply say that the Intercontinental Champion should defend his title at SummerSlam. The championship is almost as notable as the WWE Championship itself. Not since 2006 has the Intercontinental Championship gone undefended in a SummerSlam match. It is certainly not the time to begin any new traditions. Classically, the title is defended at SummerSlam and that much should happen.

5) Kofi Kingston vs. Alberto Del Rio

5 of 5

Kofi Kingston and Alberto Del Rio was a budding feud that had some steam before it was ignored in recent weeks. A SummerSlam match could revitalize the rivalry. It began when Kingston defeated Del Rio in the WWE Championship tournament a few weeks ago. Since then, Kingston has fought tough with RAW's Mr. Money in the Bank, and it would be a good sign to have both men featured on the card in a match.

After all, with Del Rio's briefcase, we need to believe that something is keeping him from cashing it in on the winner of CM Punk and John Cena. Another Cena-Punk classic could be in store for Sunday and having Del Rio cash in and win would kill a very strong feud too soon. Losing the Money in the Bank cash-in match would be even more humiliating. In order to keep everyone happy, WWE shouldn't have two different WWE Champions going in and an entirely different champion, as well as a third different champion on that night.
