Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Today's Latest Gossip on Nasri, Fabregas and Cahill

Sam WestmorelandJun 3, 2018

Arsenal have been one of the quieter power clubs during this summer's transfer window, but thanks to a pair of potentially foundation-shaking moves coming down the pipes, the floodgates are about to fly open.

The Gunners have had a clear and present need all summer long in their defense, but manager Arsene Wenger has largely stood pat in the transfer market, failing to make any impact signings.

But now, according to reports from the BBC Sport and Mirror Football, that could be changing in a big way.

Mirror reports that Samir Nasri, the want-away midfielder that has been linked to a move to deep-pocketed Manchester City, is actively on the market for a £22 million fee, bringing one of the most compelling transfer dramas of the summer to a surprising conclusion.

But the Gunners aren't done selling yet according to BBC Sport. Arsenal are close to completing the long-awaited deal sending Spanish superstar Cesc Fabregas out of Emirates and back to Barcelona—the 24-year-old midfielder's boyhood club.

This one's been in the works for five years now, and it's going to cost the Catalan juggernauts a reported £30 million, with another £5 million in incentive milestone bonuses for Fabregas.

In other words, it sounds as though Arsenal are about to get an influx anywhere in between £22 million and £57 million within the next few days. With all of the cash promised to bolster the club's roster, what is Wenger going to use it on?

The obvious answer is defense, and there are plenty of players who have been linked to a move to Emirates. In fact, a report from the Daily Express states that the Gunners are about to land Birmingham defender Scott Dann in an £8 million deal.

But that particular rumbling hasn't been confirmed by anyone and the Gunners still have strong links to the likes of Jose Enrique from Newcastle (who would slide perfectly in on the right side of the defense), Gary Cahill from Bolton (who would fill a major need for Arsenal at centre-back), and Chris Samba from Blackburn.

Any of those players fall well within the range of funds the Gunners are looking to be landing, even if there haven't been many rumblings regarding those players, and all of them are still very real possibilities for Arsenal going forward.

But the potential acquisitions don't stop on the defensive end. Wenger has been linked to midfielder Juan Mata of Valencia numerous times over the course of the summer, and with the influx of cash from the Nasri and Fabregas deals, the Gunners would certainly have the cash to splash the £20 million necessary to get the sublimely talented 23-year-old.

Arsenal have also been linked to Newcastle's resident bad boy, midfielder Joey Barton. The 28-year-old playmaker is seen as an extremely low-cost option, as the Magpies seem eager to get rid of the troublemaking midfielder. Big name scorers like Real Madrid's Karim Benzema have been on Wenger's radar as well, according to a Daily Telegraph report.

Regardless of who the Gunners spend the cash on, the Gunner faithful can rest assured that Wenger and the Gunners are going to splash the cash in a big way. They're about to be flush with cash, and with serious needs to be filled, there's a very good chance that Wenger winds up trying to make up for lost time on the transfer market.

The only real question is, will he spend it on the right pieces for the club?
