Rod Marinelli Is Through: Who Should Coach the Detroit Lions Next Season?

david zimnickiNov 10, 2008

Any Detroit Lions fan has to be wondering how in the hell Coach Marinelli still has a job.

If you listen to his press conferences on Mondays, this is especially true. Rod Marinelli just keeps preaching his same message, with the same results. It is time for a change!

The players must not be interested, or his message has failed. Rod I think may be out of his element as a head coach. I will say his players do put out an effort, just not enough to win. This is why he has to go.

I think it is time to search for a new face, one with a similar message but with the ability to teach it better.

My favorite candidate would be Bill Cower.

Bill Cower won a Super Bowl, first and foremost. He also put out a contending team year in and year out. He built and maintained his team in the right ways, with strong defense, a good offensive line, a solid running game, and fair quarterback play. Hopefully his wife and kids are tired of him being around the house and his desire to coach is itching.

Another candidate would be Dennis Green. He was a players coach somewhat, but he was no push over. If you didn't put out an exceptional effort he didn't let you get away with it. I think Dennis Green could make use of the weapons on offense like Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith.

My third candidate would be Brian Billick. He is a great analyzer of talent. He had very strong Baltimore Ravens teams. I feel he would be a great fit for the Lions. A coach the players will respect and play hard for.

A bonus to a new coach would be a new General Manager. The team is considering many options without haste. I personally hope the search stops at Floyd Reese. He built a very strong Titans team through the draft, something the Lions will be able to do in this upcoming draft with the bonus picks from Dallas.

Let's hope the Lions "move forward" in the right direction for a change!
