WWE 101: Reading Between the Lines of John Cena and CM Punk's Contract Signing

Ryan FryeJun 2, 2018

On the last edition of Monday Night Raw heading into SummerSlam, CM Punk and John Cena had a contract signing for the ages.

It wasn't your normal sign the contract, talk trash and end in a fight type of contract signing.

No, Cena and Punk did things their own way once again, proving why they are atop the WWE with very few others on their untouchable level.

Like all good storylines, it seemed to me like both superstars were doing a great deal of foreshadowing.

I am going to interpret what is going to happen at SummerSlam and beyond by the events of this past Monday Night.

CM Punk wrestling Alberto Del Rio earlier in the night

Wrestling a heel means one thing for CM Punk. He is playing a face and not a heel.

If it wasn't crystal clear by his promo the week prior, I'm not sure how you can deny it now. CM Punk has turned based on his incredible Internet following and his amazingly well-rounded skills as a WWE Superstar.

If Punk is playing a face now, I seriously doubt he'll be the beneficiary of a bad call on Sunday.

John Laurinaitis standing beside of Triple H

During Vince McMahon and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin's epic feud in the 1990's, guys such as Pat Patterson acted as Mr. McMahon's stooges.

He was one of the guys McMahon would hide behind, and convince to fight his battles for him.

Well, it seems as if Johnny Ace is going to take on that exact role with Triple H. After all, he did wrestle for the WWE in the past.

Also, take note of CM Punk pointing out that Mr. Laurinaitis does Triple H's dirty work later in the contract signing.

That tells me that like Patterson to VKM, Larinaitis will play the role of Triple H's stooge in the very near future.

The Rock's involvement

Playing the video of The Rock's recent YouTube promo on John Cena was by no means a mistake.

Rock basically molded John Cena as a phony, corporate champion, as did CM Punk.

We all know that Cena will be heavily booed in Miami, Florida come WrestleMania 28, so maybe the WWE has realized this and is going a direction that we have all been clamoring for in the recent years.

I mean, do you want the face of your company to be labeled a 'phony?'

Exactly.

John Cena criticizes the IWC

John Cena has always either embraced or ignored his Internet haters.

One thing that we've never seen is him criticize those people, and admit he'll never win them over. He said he's concerned that the people who stick with him, through the good, bad or indifferent.

Could that possibly mean he's concerned about the people who will stick with him through a turn that would embrace his heel persona?

Triple H confronts Punk, does not do the same to Cena

Perhaps in the most meaningful thing that happened in this contract signing, is Triple H went toe-to-toe toe with Punk, but only had a staredown with Cena.

Trips voiced his disdain for Punk many times, and agreed with Mr. Fruity Pebbles.

Conclusion

This contract signing peaked my interest for SummerSlam, as it foreshadowed many exciting things to come.

I believe we will finally see John Cena, along with Triple H, turn heel. It would make sense from a historical perspective, as we would basically have another Ministry type of stable on our hands.

What do you see happening at SummerSlam?

Will Triple H screw Cena or Punk? Will he call the match right down the middle? Or are we going to see the inevitable John Cena heel turn?
