Washington Redskins 2011 Predictions: Why Rex Grossman Needs to Shut His Mouth

Adam SpencerJun 7, 2018

The Washington Redskins are preparing for a long 2011 season.

The 'Skins finished 6-10 in 2010 and don't have much to look forward to as they begin their preseason schedule.

They lost Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb, and head coach Mike Shanahan clearly isn't the coach he once was.

To add to the problems in Washington, Rex Grossman, in the midst of a QB battle with John Beck, was quoted as saying the Redskins would win the NFC East:

"

"You look at us from top to bottom out here, there’s a bunch of great players.   And we don’t need people saying we’re the best right now.  But when it’s all said and done, I really feel like this team’s gonna win the [NFC] East.”

"

Are you kidding me, Rex?

How can anyone believe the Redskins are going to win the NFC East?

The Philadelphia Eagles made the playoffs in 2010 and then went out this offseason and signed pretty much every good free agent available and acquired some key pieces through trades.

The Dallas Cowboys have Tony Romo and Dez Bryant back from injuries and look primed to return to the playoff mix.

And the New York Giants came within one win of making the playoffs last year, missing out on the spot to the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.

So with no notable free agent additions, how can the Redskins be optimistic, especially after going 2-4 against the NFC East in 2010?

Yes, the Redskins do have a tiny chance of making the playoffs, but I'm not going to waste my money betting on them.

As NBC Sports explains, you can't write off the Redskins yet, but get your pens ready:

"

"It would be foolish to write off the Redskins or any other team right now.  But when the guy who’s at the top of the depth chart at the most important position on the field was a free agent for a full week and got zero sniffs, it’s hard to have much confidence in this team’s ability to leapfrog the Giants and the Cowboys and the Eagles.

It would be a great story if they do it, but it sounds beyond crazy for Grossman to call his shot when, by all appearances, the other three teams in the division are armed with rifles — and the Redskins have a pop gun."

"

Basically, it's the preseason, so every team still has a shot to win their divisions.

Let's wait until the Redskins' bye week in Week 5 to completely write them off. They should be either 1-3 or 0-4 at that point.

The bottom line is: Rex Grossman should keep his mouth shut and focus on winning the starting quarterback job before he makes ridiculous predictions like this.
