Chad Henne Is Inconsistent

Michael Heck Jun 7, 2018

The starting Miami Dolphins defense was criticized for the success when Matt Ryan and Michael Turner made scoring look easy. However, if it weren't for the two interceptions by Chad Henne, the defense may not have been on the field as much.

The reality is we know how Chad Henne performs because he's played the same way dating back to his time a Michigan Wolverine.

Blame Fasano if you wish, and it is easy to do. However, Chad threw the ball, and the INT will go against Henne's stats, not Fasano's. The pass, for an NFL quarterback, should have been on the money, which it wasn't. I understand it bounced off of Fasano's hands, just throw it to the shoulder away from the defender.

Whether in practice or game, Chad Henne is consistently inconsistent. And, as a lifelong fan, I just don't know what the front office is going to do about it. All of Henne's efforts during the offseason and lockout were marvelous, enough to impress the Miami Dolphins management and coaching staff (and me too).

Yet, he's still the same quarterback. Good arm, looks like a pro QB one game and a Division II quarterback the next—he just throws too many interceptions.

Neither of those interceptions came because the Falcons were pressuring him.

This past preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers offered some more insight into the 2011 Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins are better than teams which will sink to the bottom this season. The Dolphins starters were not better than the Atlanta Falcons but better than the Carolina Panthers. How does that translate?

Well, probably to an 8-8 or 7-9 season.

The Dolphins owned the time of possession and built a 17-0 lead. This is good, right? Well, yes and no. Yes in that the Dolphins probably would have beat the Panthers had the game taken place during the regular season. No in that the Daboll offense is still a dink-and-dunk offense with the occasional deep pass, which Henne struggled with in this game.

I can't hail Chad Henne after one preseason game. I think Reggie Bush is fragile, Daniel Thomas looks like a rookie.

It will be good to get Jake Long back. Oh, John Beck looked really nice in Washington, did he not? Accurate, aware and in command. Good gracious, I hope John Beck doesn't come back to haunt the Dolphins.

I don't believe that this offense has found its grove because they played the part for two quarters of a preseason game. I have a solution, I will present this idea in my next blog. It will be dynamic. It will be expensive for the Dolphins but the risk/reward factor is awesome. I've been thinking about it for awhile.

The reality is Chad Henne needs an incredibly strong running game to win games. He does not do well in the spotlight.

However, he is the best option for the Miami Dolphins now.

My prediction for the season: 8-8.
