WWE Summerslam: Top 5 Most Overrated Matches in Summerslam History

Justin WatryJun 7, 2018

Yesterday, my "Summerslam Series" took a look at a few matches that were never given their correct due. For a ton of reasons, some matches will never get the credit they deserve. Today will be the opposite of that.

Some matches get WAY too much credit. Some are just so overblown as far as rankings. And as lists go, it is sad. These matches can be on any Summerslam card. Let's do this!

5. HHH/Rock/Kurt Angle for WWF Title: 2000

1 of 5

Wow! What a year 2000 was. Most of their pay-per-views were top notch. Their angles were on fire, and they were soundly beating WCW and ECW into the ground.

Sadly, when you look back over a decade, you will find that both WrestleMania 2000 and Summerslam 2000 were not very good. That is too bad.

That brings us to the night's main event: Rock defending his gold against Angle and Triple H. When I read how people talk about this match, it is as if some classic triple threat match took place. Umm...no. This was nothing special at all.

Angle gets knocked cold early. Stephanie is in and out of this match (make your own joke there). Rock retains the title. Angle leaves with Triple H's wife. Yeah, soap opera all over the match.

Sorry. For Summerslam, the second biggest show of the year, people need to relax on rating this match anything higher than "good."

4. Test vs. Shane McMahon: 1999

2 of 5

To be honest, a few years ago I bought into the hype as well. Everyone ranting and raving how amazing this street fight was.

Test was a guy ready to break through the glass ceiling on multiple occasions. Shane was good for some spots every few months and could bump around well.

You throw in the Mean Street Posse and The Stooges, you get an entertaining brawl. Make no mistake, that's all this was—an entertaining brawl.

Nothing big. Nothing epic. Just a quality street fight.

3. Angle vs. Lesnar for the WWE Title: 2003

3 of 5

I never understood the lovefest around this match. I never did. Their match at WrestleMania XIX I get. It was a great match, until Lesnar went for the Shooting Star Press. I get that one.

Why this match was showered with praise, I never understood. My guess? It was Angle and Lesnar in the ring together. No matter what they did, the critics would just rank this thing highly.

Again, it is Lesnar and Angle—it had to be a classic, right? No. They delivered a good match. The Ironman was much better weeks later. Worst of all, Lesnar tapped to Angle in the end. Big, bad heel Brock built up...to tap?

Sorry, I can only rank this so high, and the fact that they gave the title to Brock anyways weeks later makes my all the more positive I am right here.

2. Bret vs. Undertaker for the WWF Title: 1997

4 of 5

Now this match is overrated! To be honest, I did not like a lot about 1997. There were a few bright spots with Austin, but Bret Hart was never my cup of tea. Legendary Hall of Famer, just not this end-all, be-all god some think of him as.

For this match, HBK was the special ref, and in the end he accidentally helped Bret win the title. A few months later, the Montreal Screwjob happened.

I think people rate this so highly because of its place in history, and the cool ending was very effective. For me, the other 30 minutes was meh.

It had the same problem this Sunday could have: When there is a special ref, you are just waiting for the controversy/interference, so the actual match does not mean much.

Speaking of controversy, my No. 1 pick is...

1. Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog for IC Title: 1992

5 of 5

1. I am not a huge Bret Hart fan. Big fan, not a huge fan.

2. I am not old enough to have seen this live, so I am sure that factors into this.

With that out of the way, this "greatest match of all time" BS around this bout is just laughable to me. Maybe at the time...sure. Not much would have topped it back in 1992.

Looking back, this probably was the greatest match of all time for its day and age. Sadly, I was not watching (too young) in that day and age, so it does not have that special feeling.

I've told the story before, but quick recap. I had never seen this match. Everyone and their mothers was hyping this bout up huge online. I finally watched, and I enjoyed it.

Fun match. Cool setting. Nice moment. Great all around, but it will never get near my top match rankings.

Sorry folks, it might be time to move on from this match..."times they are a changin!"
