Rory MacDonald Deflects GSP Comparisons, Calls out Carlos Condit
Rory MacDonald may be the future of the welterweight division, but he isn't Georges St-Pierre.
The 22-year-old prospect continued to feed the hype machine with his impressive first-round stoppage of Mike Pyle at UFC 133.
Pyle, a wily veteran with a tremendous amount of experience against world-class opposition, was completely manhandled by MacDonald and served as another name to a growing résumé. The win comes nearly four months after MacDonald's dominant unanimous decision win over Nate Diaz.
With victories over quality opponents, fans are starting to realize the great potential in the young Canadian, and he is already being compared to St-Pierre, who is arguably the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
"[GSP] is a great friend of mine, and he helps me a hell of a lot," MacDonald told Karyn Bryant in a post-fight interview at UFC 133.
"He's a mentor of mine, and as far as people saying I could be greater than him or I have as much potential as him, I take it as a compliment, but I'll never be Georges, I'm Rory MacDonald. I'm going to do my thing and do it the way that I want to do it, and fight new guys, do new things. We're completely different fighters."
Whether he's the next GSP or just Rory MacDonald, the world will be watching closely as "the Waterboy" steadily climbs the welterweight totem pole.
It's unknown what lies ahead as far as future opponents are concerned, but MacDonald is already eyeing one welterweight in particular.
"My rematch with Carlos is very important to me. I know he's already matched up with B.J. He's doing great in his career, and I'm going to just keep doing my thing, and hopefully, we'll meet up along the road. I know it's going to happen. It's just a matter of when, so I'm looking forward to that," said MacDonald.
