USA vs Mexico 2011 TV Schedule: Coverage Info and Preview for Soccer Friendly
Juergen Klinsmann isn't exactly getting an easy initiation to being the head coach of the US National team. Sure, the US have a friendly lying ahead of them, but every match against Mexico counts.
After the US just dropped the ball against Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final, they are seeking revenge. Four unanswered goals left the US beaten and embarrassed on an international stage.
No matter how this match shakes out, there is no way that the US can avenge that loss entirely. The stakes just aren't as high, but it would definitely help alleviate some of the pain of losing such a crucial game.
The US haven't exactly had enough time to prepare for this match, to say the least. Klinsmann has been outspoken about his plans for the future, but throwing a lineup together on such short notice is going to be a challenge that could be out of reach for the US.
On the bright side, the US have absolutely nothing to lose. If they win, people will praise Klinsmann and start talking about their hopes in the 2014 World Cup and things of that nature.
If they should lose, nobody can justifiably fault Klinsmann. After all, making the changes necessary to turn a soccer program around takes time.
Even so, this match will be very telling of where the US are mentally. This is the dawning of a new era. A good first impression on the rest of the world, and Mexico in particular, could put them on the fast track towards recovery.
Klinsmann has to implement a new system. He was the perfect hire because of his ability to put forth a creative attack, something sorely lacking from an uptight US squad in years past.
While they may not have the system in place, as that is obviously a work in progress, a strong showing will speak volumes about Klinsmann's ability to handle adversity.
If he can take down Mexico on such short notice, imagine what he'll be able to do a few years down the road with all the preparation he needs and a system in place?
Coverage of the match will take place on August 10th, 9:00 PM EST. The match will be shown on ESPN2.
