WWE: After Watching Monday Night Raw, Everyone Get Ready for CM Punk/Triple H

David LevinAug 8, 2011

There has been the Montreal Screw Job. Then there was the potential Chicago Screw Job. Now, could it be the California Screw Job?

As I sat and watched RAW and the announcement of the COO of the WWE, Triple H, make the announcement that he would be the special guest referee in the main event at Summer Slam, I could not help but think of the predictability of what will take place this coming weekend and the potential hangover from the event leading into Monday night and the next few months.

Then I remembered that I had figured out all of the events that would take place at Hardcore Justice from Sunday, and wouldn’t you known it I was wrong about that one, so I guess I may be wrong about this one.

But what if I am not and actually “right”?

Triple H being involved in the event reminds me of PPV matches in the past with guest referees (Mike Tyson helping Stone Cold win the WWF title over Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania XIV comes to mind) or stipulations that happen at the last minute (usually anything Vince McMahon was involved in). But then it started to make sense that the COO of the WWE wants his title back.

CM Punk and John Cena are great as a tandem and produce some great promos, verbal jousts and some pretty darn good wrestling, which has made Cena look better in the ring. As stated before, Cena wanted to work an angle with Punk months ago and now he got his wish.

But what happens after the Punk/Cena match? As part of the commentary tonight at the infamous contract signing (it always happens like this), Punk must win this match, as Cena said, or he is a one hit wonder. Cena will go on to Wrestlemania (we hope) to face The Rock and the millions (and I mean Millions) of fans in the WWE Universe.

Cena, like he said, cannot compete with that or the fans and adoring IWC that Punk has on his side and has grouped together in cult-like fashion. But it would appear that Punk will win in California this Sunday night and take the title out of the ring.

Only one slight problem- the COO wants his title back.

Triple H is the one who will turn the tide of support in the IWC and the fans who come to the arena. It will be interesting to see if Triple H turns heel to do so, and thus giving Punk the platform to be the anti-hero and cult hero he has been searching for.

Right now, though, it is the brand’s two biggest stars carrying the brand on their backs because no one at this time can do so.

The Miz is not trying to move back toward main event status. Dolph Ziggler, although proving to give legitimacy to the US Title, is locked in a war with stars like Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne. R-Truth will not main event anytime soon if he is battling John Morrison, but each time they have been in the ring, Morrison is hurt again and again, giving Truth the victory.

So the arc for Triple H to challenge for the title again is to referee and make sure Punk wins so he can claim his rightful prize. Which means he does something Vince McMahon did quite often- he could have his title and laugh about it too?

As for Cena, it will mean he either takes a break (which had been rumored before) or he waits it out for The Rock and finds another veteran of the ring to feud with (Jericho possibly?).

Either way, the road to the future and the “undisputed” WWE Championship still has to go through the McMahon family.
