UFC 133 Results: Vitor Belfort Ruled out of Title Shot Against Anderson Silva
This past weekend at UFC 133, Vitor Belfort made an emphatic statement after he knocked out his opponent, Yoshihiro Akiyama. Following the win, Belfort was loud and clear about receiving another crack at Anderson Silva.
But UFC President Dana White didn't appear to be listening.
"If it were like the Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva fight—that'd be one thing. But it lasted what, 35 seconds?,"White told ESPN.co.uk.
"It's something Vitor is going to have to chew on for a while."
Belfort fought Silva at UFC 126 after returning from a 13-month layoff due to injury. Belfort was expected to be the champion's toughest challenge to date, but that wasn't the case, as Silva floored his opponent with a standing front kick that signaled the end of the bout. It was one of the most spectacular knockouts of the year, and in Silva's career.
Silva will defend the middleweight title against Yushin Okami later this month at UFC 134.
White announced the winner between Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann at UFC 136 will likely receive the next shot at "The Spider," granted he is able to get past his Japanese counterpart.
However, Belfort proved he can still be a competitive force in the middleweight division with his win this past weekend. And according to White, if the Brazilian can maintain a consistent track record, then it is possible he could receive another title shot.
"Vitor's going to have to beat some people at 185 and then work his way back up to that title shot because it'd be hard to make that title fight after what happened [against Silva]," he said.
