Bridgestone Invitational 2011: Caddy Steals Spotlight from Adam Scott

Mike RaffoneJun 7, 2018

Not since the classic comedy Caddyshack hit movie theaters in 1980 has the carrier of golf clubs captured center stage.

That was until yesterday in Akron, OH at the Firestone Country Club.

Following Adam Scott's impressive 17-under-par victory at the World Golf Championships' Bridgestone Invitational, his caddy, New Zealander Steve Williams, surprisingly stole the spotlight from his new 31-year-old boss.

What should have been a memorable moment for Scott inexplicably evolved into a surreal vindication of sorts for this recently signed caddy.

Williams—Tiger Woods' other divorcee—carried Tiger's clubs for 12 years while watching Woods amass $87 million in prize money and accumulate 72 worldwide wins including 13 majors. However, Woods unexpectedly fired Williams last month.

When queried, Woods offered the media only a terse explanation for his decision to part with his long time friend and golfing confidant. Many speculated that there was more to Woods' story and anticipated that additional details would eventually surface.

They just didn't expect them to surface they way they did yesterday.

In a move that mirrored Danny Noonan's Caddyshack  role when he opportunistically grabbed the college scholarship that smug Judge Elihu Smails proffered at the fictional Bushwood Country Club, an obviously disgruntled Williams seized the spotlight almost immediately after Scott's final putt.

Instead of Scott celebrating his first World Golf Championship before the CBS Sports cameras, Williams took center stage. The former Woods caddy mostly vented and pointedly contradicted the manner in which Woods terminated their seemingly successful sports relationship.

Tacky? Yes. Surprising? No.

Knowing that Woods tied for 37th place and finished 18 shots behind his new employer may have alleviated some of Williams' angst. At some level, it probably provided the vindication Williams wanted following the disputed parting.

Today, Scott and Williams should both be celebrating.

Another caddy has made it into spotlight.
