Adam Scott, Steve Williams Gel and Jab at WGC Bridgestone Invitational

Kevin PahlauJun 7, 2018

Walking up Firestone's famed 18, Adam Scott tried to let the moment of victory set in. Tipping his hat and acknowledging the crowd that was gathered, Scott heard shouts of support for him but even more for his caddie Steve Williams.

There was no disrespect for Scott who had an incredible day at the Bridgestone Invitational. Rather, it was a culmination of celebrating Scott's victory and Williams' vindication.

Williams, who was fired by Tiger Woods back in July, has publicly admitted he has felt he was treated unfairly by Woods. He has said that he wasted the last two years of his life and that it was a very difficult time for he and his family.

This week in Akron proved to be a turning point for both Williams and for Scott.

The two just seemed to jell more this week than they have since they started working together.

Everything they had been working on together seemed to come together. It was as though both had enough information about what they wanted from each other. This was the week the player-caddie partnership fell comfortably into place.

Scott has admitted lacking confidence in the past when he really needed it—coming down the stretch and then not having enough follow through. Self doubt is a terrible enemy.

Williams, on the other hand, admits to always being confident and sometimes overconfident in his role as a caddie and his approach.

It's exactly what Scott needed, though.

He needed that vote of confidence or the helpful suggestion when approaching shots he may question. He needed a push every now and then. He also believes he needs to prove to Williams that he has the skills, talent and mentality to win.

It may not seem like much, but when you are playing for $1.4 million, those little things add up.

All those little things helped Scott close the day with a 65 and finish the week at 17-under. This was his eighth PGA Tour win and it was the achievement of a goal Scott made to himself earlier this year.

During the trophy presentation at the Bridgestone Invitational, Scott said he challenged himself earlier this year by setting up goals to win a major and a world golf event by the end of the year.

One goal met. Another one left to achieve.
