WWE, Will Wade Barrett Take Daniel Bryan's World Title Shot Away from Him?

Tom ClarkJun 7, 2018

So, Wade Barrett has heat with Daniel Bryan, the recently crowned Mr. Money in the Bank. I wonder how long it will be before Barrett takes the briefcase away from him.

Don’t misunderstand me here, I am as much a fan of Daniel Bryan as the next guy. The fact that he’s finally caught a break in WWE is nothing short of shocking, as up until this point, he couldn’t catch a cold in the company.

But, the moment Bryan climbed that ladder and pulled down that case, I thought of the implications of his win. Where were they going with this?

Does Vince McMahon really want us to believe that Daniel Bryan, who has only been allowed in WWE to do about a tenth of what he did in Ring of Honor, would be given a push of this magnitude for no reason? What was the end result of this?

Daniel Bryan as World Heavyweight Champion?

It’s mind blowing that WWE would go this route, considering that their top guys these days either need to have a pedigree, like Randy Orton, or be a controversial attraction like John Cena. Daniel Bryan is none of the above.

Daniel Bryan is a professional wrestler, in every sense of the word. He doesn’t have a lot of flash, he’s not all that captivating on the mic, in fact he could very well be the modern day Dean Malenko in his approach to his character.

In other words, Daniel Bryan is all business. But he’s not show business.

The ascension of CM Punk on RAW is a rare occurrence, quite possibly the best example of the company capturing lighting in a bottle since "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. He is the right guy at the right moment on the right program.

Understanding that, and knowing Punk’s own background and reputation as a great worker, it’s perhaps not that much of a stretch to imagine Daniel Bryan in that same role on SmackDown. When it comes to the business, anything is possible.

But, I would venture a guess that most fans, while wishing Bryan well, have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. This is where Wade Barrett comes in.

While Drew Mcintyre’s gimmick has been that of future greatness, and his potential to become the next big star, for Wade Barrett, it is no gimmick. It is reality.

Barrett has all the tools necessary to make it happen. He can work, he can talk, and he looks great. He is a natural, a guy who just gets it, and understands how to carry himself. He is one of the best heels on SmackDown right now, and most fans and writers agree that he is one of the future faces of WWE.

For Barrett, it has never really been a matter of if, but when, he gets over the hump and takes that next step. Is this when it happens?

Right now, it’s a matter of watching the clock. WrestleMania 28 is seven months away, and if Bryan were to survive this feud against Barrett with his world title contract intact, then it’s back to “let’s all just wait and see.”

But, if Wade does indeed challenge Bryan to put the briefcase on the line, either in an upcoming SummerSlam match, or perhaps at a later date, then it is very likely he could walk away with the title shot. If that happens, then he could cash it in whenever the mood strikes him, becoming world champion when no one expects it.

Then again, there is always the possibility that Daniel Bryan’s claim that he is waiting until WrestleMania 28 is bogus, and he attempts to cash in the contract before then. We could actually see him as world champion, as soon as the night of SummerSlam.

No matter what the outcome ends up being in this feud, the fact is that it should be an entertaining one. Both men know how to go in the ring, and their contrast in styles should make for an exciting match.

Barrett as the ruthless heel, against Bryan as the baby face dreamer. Who wins in that match? The fans do.
